Bugatti unveils One-of-One W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug’

A dragonfly-inspired masterpiece completing a four-car collector saga

In the rarefied world of bespoke hypercars, few projects capture the imagination quite like the latest creation from Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division. Meet the Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug’, a one-of-one open-top masterpiece that blends cutting-edge design with the delicate beauty of nature, and completes an extraordinary four-car commission unlike anything else on the road.

A hypercar collection inspired by nature’s smallest marvels

The ‘Fly Bug’ isn’t just another bespoke Bugatti, it’s the final chapter in a deeply personal collection built around the intricate beauty of insects. Commissioned by a loyal collector, this unique series includes: a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, a Bugatti Chiron, and a Bugatti Divo

Each model interprets the natural world through Bugatti’s design language, and now, the dragonfly takes center stage, symbolizing speed, elegance, and iridescent beauty. At the heart of the ‘Fly Bug’ lies a striking new finish: “Dragonfly Blue.” Developed exclusively for this car, the paint shifts between vivid blue and turquoise depending on light and angle, echoing the shimmering wings of its namesake.

A flowing ellipse pattern sweeps across the bodywork, growing denser toward the rear before dissolving into the air intakes. It’s a design that feels alive, subtle, organic, and constantly changing depending on perspective. Even the wheels are meticulously color-matched, a complex feat given the differing materials and paint processes involved.

Inside, Bugatti’s craftsmanship reaches new heights. Designers created a completely new material treatment: Leather layered over Alcantara, a three-dimensional geometric finish and a full integration of the ellipse motif across doors and armrests

This marks the first time Bugatti has extended such a graphic seamlessly across multiple interior surfaces, an engineering challenge as much as a design one.

One of the most technically demanding elements is also one of the most subtle. For the first time in the brand’s history, the iconic Bugatti Macaron has been integrated directly into the exterior graphic on the car’s flank. Perfectly positioning and scaling the emblem, while preserving its intricate detailing, required extraordinary precision, pushing the limits of Bugatti’s paint and design capabilities.

The bespoke touches continue with the signature “Dancing Elephant” gear selector, a tribute to Rembrandt Bugatti. It’s a subtle reminder that Bugatti’s DNA has always blended art and engineering.

This project was born from a close creative dialogue between the collector and Bugatti’s design team, led by Frank Heyl. Over multiple commissions, that relationship evolved into something rare: a unified artistic vision expressed across four completely different hypercars.

The W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug’ is more than a finale, it’s a statement. A celebration of craftsmanship, storytelling, and the limitless possibilities of Bugatti’s Sur Mesure program.

In an era where customization is often superficial, this collection proves what’s possible when a manufacturer and collector push boundaries together: not just cars, but a cohesive body of work, rolling sculptures inspired by the natural world.

And with the ‘Fly Bug,’ that journey reaches a breathtaking conclusion.
