McLaren is expanding its presence in the United States with the opening of a new Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) at the Port of Baltimore, marking the British supercar maker’s largest investment to date in the Americas.
McLaren has officially opened its new Vehicle Processing Center in Baltimore, Maryland, creating a dedicated facility where cars destined for customers across the Americas will undergo final preparation, quality checks and personalization before delivery.
The new facility is located at Tradepoint Atlantic, a major logistics and industrial hub built on the former Sparrows Point steel site. The bespoke VPC represents an investment of more than $10 million in facilities and tooling, while also creating new jobs for skilled automotive technicians, paint specialists, logistics personnel and management staff.
The grand opening brought together Maryland Governor Wes Moore, McLaren Automotive CEO Nick Collins, Chief Commercial Officer Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, Chief Quality Officer Jochen Schnez and McLaren Americas President Nicolas Brown, alongside a selection of McLaren supercars.
“A little over a year ago, we came together to break ground on this facility, and now it is open and functioning as one of the most advanced VPCs in the world,” said Nicolas Brown, President of McLaren Americas. “This facility shows an incredible investment in the Americas market, and allows us the opportunity to better ensure every McLaren delivered in this region exceeds the standards our customers expect.”
A new final stop before delivery
The Baltimore VPC has been purpose-built around McLaren’s vehicle preparation and quality-control requirements. Cars arriving in the region can receive final vehicle preparation, customer personalization work and detailed quality assurance before being handed over to their owners.
The facility also incorporates advanced quality-control systems and specialized tooling designed to ensure vehicles meet McLaren’s standards before reaching dealerships and customers.
For McLaren, the location is about more than simply processing cars. The company says the facility will allow it to carry out more of the final preparation and quality-control process locally, giving the brand greater control over vehicles as they enter its largest market outside the UK.
The project was developed in partnership with Tradepoint Atlantic, which has transformed the former steelmaking complex into a major global logistics and supply-chain center.
“We are proud to welcome McLaren to Tradepoint Atlantic and to Baltimore,” said Kerry Doyle, Managing Director of Tradepoint Atlantic. “McLaren joins a growing roster of iconic automotive brands that have chosen Tradepoint as a critical link in their global supply chains.”
McLaren doubles down on America
The Baltimore facility arrives as McLaren accelerates investment on both sides of the Atlantic.
In September, the company announced a £500 million investment program focused on expanding its UK manufacturing, engineering and operations. The program is intended to support the development of McLaren’s next generation of vehicles, including the company’s first performance SUV.
The Americas will also receive additional investment. McLaren expects to put another $100 million into sales and service facilities across the region over the next 12 months, further expanding its infrastructure in the market.
The new Baltimore VPC therefore represents a significant piece of a much larger strategy: bringing McLaren’s production, engineering and customer-support operations into a new phase while strengthening its presence in the United States.
With a dedicated processing center now operating at one of America’s major vehicle-import hubs, McLaren is putting more resources behind the final—and arguably most important—stage of delivering its supercars to American customers.
