This month, Carroll puts down his wrenches long enough to reminisce about some of his early Can-Am experiences.
Shelby Americanโs GT 40 program ended with Fordโs decision not to return to LeMans after our second victory in 1967. Prospects for my continued employment with the finest racing team that the world had yet seen looked bleak. However, Shelby, never at a loss for a plan, solved my immediate problem when he purchased (or otherwise acquired) the assets and liabilities of Peyton Cramer racing. I never did figure out what the assets were, but among what I considered to be the liabilities were two wrecked Lola T70s, two wrecked tube frame McLaren CanAm cars, an assortment of blown-up small block Chevrolet engines and some very secondhand Hewland LG transaxles.
