To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Maserati, Motor Racing Legends and the Maserati Club UK are staging a historic Maserati race at this yearโs Donington Historic Festival, May 3-5. Running as a doubleheader over two of the Festivalโs three days, the Maserati Centenary Trophy is for all types of Maseratis and OSCAs built before 1966.
The Italian marqueโs history in motorsport goes back to 1926โa dozen years after its founding in 1914โwhen Alfieri Maserati took his Tipo 26 to a class victory in that yearโs Targa Florio. In 1927, Maserati won the Italian constructors title as Alfieriโs brother, Ernesto, claimed the Italian drivers title. Further successes followed in subsequent decades as Maserati produced a series of iconic models that enjoyed success in Grand Prix and sportscar racing, as well as taking two Indy 500 wins. Perhaps the pinnacle of Maseratiโs achievements was achieved in 1957 when Juan Manuel Fangio drove a 250F to the Formula One World Drivers Championship.
