A 1931 Duesenberg Tourster by Derham, owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini of West Orange, N.J., received top honors at the inaugural Concours d’Elegance at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. The show field featured more than 170 vintage
automobiles and motorcycles.
The Best in Show Derham Tourster was created by famed designer Gordon Buehrig, who served as Duesenberg’s chief body designer and also designed the Cord 810/812 and the 1935-’36 Auburn lineup. It’s believed seven Derham Toursters were built.
The concours d’elegance benefits historic Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, one of America’s great private residences. It was built by F. A. Seiberling, founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber.
Two Isotta-Fraschini automobiles also received top awards. Receiving the Top CCCA Classic award was a 1922 Isotta-
Fraschini Tipo 8 torpedo phaeton by Sala owned by Roy
Margenau, while a 1929 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A convertible sedan by Floyd Derham, owned by John Shibles, earned Best Foreign CCCA Classics award.
“Despite a threatening weather predication and brief early morning showers 99 percent of our exhibitors were on the show field for what turned out to be a sunny—and very enjoyable—day,” said David Schultz, concours director.
For 2015 the lead feature of the concours d’elegance will be “The Motorcars of 1915” in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the completion of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens.
