Automotive Art – Chris Dugan’s “Gold GT40”

Gold Ford GT40 Artwork

Artist Chris Dugan paints a study of the GT40 that finished 3rd in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 1966, the GT40โ€™s finished Le Mans 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. First and second were the Shelby-American cars driven by McLaren and Amon, and Miles and Hulme. They fought out the closest ever finish to the great race, the winning margin being, โ€œofficiallyโ€ judged to be, just 8 meters.โ€‚However, the car depicted is the gold-colored 3rd place car, entered by Holman & Moody / Essex Wire Corp,โ€‚driven by Ronnie Bucknam and Dick Hutcheson. It finished some 12 laps behind the other two cars. The original picture was commissioned by the carโ€™s present owner andโ€‚painted in gouache, though limited edition prints are available.
