Lotus 38 makes N.A. Debut

The Henry Ford Museumโ€™s newly restored Lotus 38, the first rear-engined car to win the Indianapolis 500, made its North American debut at this yearโ€™s Pebble Beach Concours dโ€™Elegance. Wraps were pulled off Jim Clarkโ€™s 1965 Indy winner during a pre-concours reception featuring Dan Gurney, who drove a similar car in 1965, and Bobby Unser, with Christian Overland representing the Dearborn museum.

The event filled multiple purposes, with a simultaneous unveiling of the official logo for the 100th Anniversary Indy 500 taking place in both Pebble Beach, with Unser officiating, and Indianapolis, where his fellow three-time 500 winner Johnny Rutherford did the honors. Overland was representing the museumโ€™s Racing in America exhibition, which celebrates the rich racing heritage of the United States and the innovations that have resulted from it, with the Lotus serving as a key component of the display.
