The new Bentley Continental has been such a success that there is to be a four-door model, the Flying Spur. Fine, except that it may be made in Germany along with other Volkswagen products. Some British newspapers have gone into shock! Horror! So far as I am concerned, Bentley ceased making cars in 1931; everything else has been a tribute band.
I have been round the new Rolls-Royce factory, which is opposite the Goodwood motor circuit. BMW, which owns Rolls-Royce, wanted a site at Goodwood because of the festival, the Revival Meeting, Goodwood House and so on. When you sell a Rolls-Royce, you are selling heritage. The only things that actually originate in the Goodwood factory, however, involve wood and leather, everything else is made in Germany—and even the cow hides come from Bavaria.
