Books about 1970’s posthumous World Champion Jochen Rindt are few and far between. On the 40th anniversary of his death it was inevitable that someone would look at the enigmatic driver again, but I didn’t think anything would come near to the original biography by Heinz Pruller, written soon after the crash.
Tremayne, however, has left no stone unturned in his research—drivers, team managers, friends and family members all have had their say-together with journalists both past and present. All this input has led to a “no holds barred” book recounting the life of this most mercurial character. From his childhood to that black day at Monza and beyond, the reader is drawn into the story that will educate even the most knowledgeable fan but, not in a dry way. +
The photos and illustrations complement the text well, with many from family or other archives that have not been seen before. In essence, Tremayne has done an excellent job of relaying the story of a man many of us knew, but many more didn’t.
