Schumacher Ferrari Sells for Record $7.5m

The Ferrari F2001 Grand Prix car that Michael Schumacher drove to victory in the 2001 Grands Prix at Monaco and in Hungary has been sold at Sothebyโ€™s Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York for a record $7,504,000. The November 16 sale of F2001 chassis 211 makes it the most valuable modern-era Formula One car ever sold at auction.

The Contemporary Art Evening Sale was the first presentation for public sale of the car curated by RM Sothebyโ€™s, as well as the first automobile ever offered in a Sothebyโ€™s art auction. The sale as a whole brought in $310.2 million, with a 96-percent sell-through rate.

Next in New York for RM Sothebyโ€™s is its December 6 ICONS sale at Sothebyโ€™s Manhattan headquarters, where a pair of Le Mansโ€“pedigreed machines, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione and a 1952 Jaguar C-Type will be offered.
