The Ferrari F2001 Grand Prix car that Michael Schumacher drove to victory in the 2001 Grands Prix at Monaco and in Hungary has been sold at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York for a record $7,504,000. The November 16 sale of F2001 chassis 211 makes it the most valuable modern-era Formula One car ever sold at auction.
The Contemporary Art Evening Sale was the first presentation for public sale of the car curated by RM Sotheby’s, as well as the first automobile ever offered in a Sotheby’s art auction. The sale as a whole brought in $310.2 million, with a 96-percent sell-through rate.
Next in New York for RM Sotheby’s is its December 6 ICONS sale at Sotheby’s Manhattan headquarters, where a pair of Le Mans–pedigreed machines, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione and a 1952 Jaguar C-Type will be offered.
