Velocity Restorations has transformed one of America’s most nostalgic yet dynamically compromised performance cars into a thoroughly re-engineered modern classic. Based in Pensacola, Florida, the company’s Fox Body Mustang restomod retains the unmistakable character of the third-generation Mustang while replacing its weakest engineering elements with contemporary hardware.
At first glance, the car remains remarkably faithful to the original 1979–1993 design. Its familiar body panels, headlights, bumper detailing, glasshouse, and restrained rear treatment preserve the late-1980s aesthetic. The major visual departures are subtle: a two-inch cowl hood, 18-inch three-piece billet wheels, modern wide-section tires, and flawless BASF paintwork. Customers can specify either LX notchback or GT hatchback body styles and virtually any desired exterior color.
The transformation becomes more significant underneath. Rather than relying solely on the original unibody, Velocity bolts a Roadster Shop-spec chassis beneath it, dramatically increasing structural rigidity. Independent front suspension, a multi-link rear arrangement, coilovers, a Ford 9-inch rear end, and six-piston disc brakes at all four corners bring the chassis architecture into the modern era. A carbon-fiber driveshaft and 3.55 final-drive gearing complement the performance package.
Power comes from Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. In naturally aspirated form, output is around 500 horsepower, while an optional Whipple supercharger elevates the engine to an extraordinary 715 hp. With a curb weight of roughly 3,000 pounds, the resulting power-to-weight ratio is formidable.
Inside, Velocity takes a similarly restrained approach. Heated Recaro sport seats, Alcantara trim, upgraded upholstery, billet steering hardware, Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air climate control, modernized electrical equipment, and a period-inspired audio system provide contemporary usability without introducing distracting screens. The objective is not to erase the Fox Body’s identity, but to refine it.
That philosophy extends throughout Velocity’s production facility. Donor vehicles undergo fabrication, chassis preparation, paint, assembly, testing, and quality-control stages in a structured production-line process. Each station receives dedicated time, combining artisan craftsmanship with repeatable manufacturing discipline.
