BMW's agent for Styria and Carinthia before World War II, Graz-born racing driver and engineer Wolfgang Denzel began converting Volkswagen's military vehicles into delivery vans in Vienna at the end of the war. 1948 saw production of the first Denzel sports car on a Volkswagen chassis. From 1952 Denzel stopped using Beatles in favor of his own tubular steel frame. Subsequently, Volkswagen only supplied the suspension system and engines.
A short wheel base of 2.1 meters makes for appealing road handling while low weight and 85 bhp yields excellent acceleration.
By 1959 Denzel had built about 65 sports cars and 28 are currently accounted for.
