The latest high-performance showdown from carwow puts three very different machines into the spotlight: the all-new Lotus Eletre X, Ferrari’s exotic Purosangue, and Lamborghini’s formidable Huracán Performante. What begins as a conventional drag race between two performance SUVs quickly develops into a much more intriguing contest, with the loser earning an opportunity to take on a genuine supercar.
The Lotus Eletre X brings an unconventional powertrain to the fight. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine works alongside two electric motors to produce a formidable 952 horsepower and 935 Nm of torque. That output is delivered through an all-wheel-drive system, giving the Lotus enormous theoretical acceleration potential. However, its substantial 2,615-kg curb weight represents a significant disadvantage, particularly against lighter machinery.
Ferrari takes a very different approach with the Purosangue. Beneath its sophisticated SUV-inspired bodywork sits a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 developing 725 hp and 716 Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, while launch control is designed to maximize traction from a standing start. At approximately 2,133 kg, the Ferrari gives away considerable power to the Lotus but carries nearly half a ton less mass.
Then there is the Lamborghini Huracán Performante. Its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 produces 640 hp and 600 Nm, with an all-wheel-drive system and dual-clutch transmission helping deploy that power. Most importantly, it weighs only around 1,480 kg, making it dramatically lighter than either SUV.
On paper, the Lotus appears to have an overwhelming power advantage, but straight-line performance is rarely determined by horsepower alone. Weight, launch characteristics, drivetrain response, gearing, and traction all become critical factors.
