What happens when a purpose-built drift machine with more than 1,000 horsepower takes on one of Lamborghini’s most accomplished V10 supercars? That is exactly what Mat Watson and the carwow team set out to discover in an unconventional performance showdown between a heavily modified BMW M2 and a stock Lamborghini Huracan Performante.
The BMW is no ordinary M2. Developed as a Red Bull drift car, it retains BMW’s S58 3.0-liter inline-six but replaces its twin-turbo arrangement with a single, enormous turbocharger. The result is a staggering 1,100 horsepower and 1,200 Nm of torque. Power reaches the rear wheels through a five-speed sequential transmission, while extensive weight reduction brings the car down to roughly 1,400 kilograms.
The Huracan Performante approaches the challenge from an entirely different engineering philosophy. Its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 produces 640 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to all four wheels. At approximately 1,480 kilograms, it carries a modest weight penalty compared with the BMW, but its all-wheel-drive system and launch-control capability provide a significant advantage when maximum traction is required.
And traction is likely to be the defining factor. The BMW may have an enormous power advantage, but a drift car is fundamentally engineered to break rear-tire grip rather than maximize it. Putting 1,100 horsepower onto cold rear tires through a sequential gearbox is an entirely different proposition from launching an AWD supercar.
To make matters even more interesting, a standard BMW M2 joins the contest. With 480 horsepower, rear-wheel drive and considerably less extreme hardware, it provides an intriguing benchmark for just how much performance the heavily modified drift car can actually exploit.
