The VII Artcurial Automobiles sur les Champs 2014 auction was held 2 November in Paris, resulting in โฌ5.9 million in total sales and an 80% sell-through rate for the automobiles. The 7th auction in Artcurialโs ‘Automobiles Sur Les Champs’ series of Paris sales was held at the Artcurial headquarters on the Champs Elysรฉes.
“Once again, the amazing work carried out by Artcurial Motorcars has been acknowleged by ever increasing numbers of French and international collectors. Thanks to them, we have established world records for two Porsches this evening, and the department has realised sales of close to โฌ50 million for 2014, the biggest annual figure since we started. This is wonderful recognition for the expertise and the close-knit team at Artcurial,” said Matthieu Lamoure, Managing Director at Artcurial Motorcars.
The top result at the November 2014 Artcurial sur les Champs auction went to the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that traded hands for โฌ955,400 ($1,264,000 USD). The left-hand-drive Aston sold to a European collector following a battle between two international buyers, one in the room and a Russian telephone bidder.
The strong demand for classic 1970s Porsches was illustrated by the 1974 Porsche Carrera 2.7 Targa (lot 234) that fetched โฌ232,400 ($427,932 USD) and the 1972 Porsche 911 2.4S Targa that sold for โฌ212,200 ($280,800 USD), both achieving world record prices.
Other highlights amongst the 80 lots in the Artcurial Paris VII Sur Les Champs 2014 sale included the 1961 Jaguar MKII that belonged to the French artist and inventor of Outrenoir and Noir-Lumiรจre, Pierre Soulages. The Jaguar sold for โฌ57,200 ($75,690 USD), while a 1969 Morgan 4/4 Roadster driven by Gรฉrard Depardieu in Les Valseuses made โฌ38,100 ($50,450 USD), against a pre-sale estimate of โฌ20,000 to โฌ30,000.
Several bidding battles took place in the automobilia department, a genre started by Maรฎtre Hervรฉ Poulain in 1974. A children’s 1:2 scale replica of the Porsche 936/78 turbo, driven to victory by Jacky Ickx in the 1976 and 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours (lot 161) sold for โฌ26,000 ($34,400 USD). A series of seven contact sheets from the production of the film of Le Mans found a new owner for โฌ2,000 ($2,646 USD), above the estimate of โฌ500 to 800.
This was the last 2014 sale for Artcurial Motorcars, who recorded a sales total of close to โฌ50 million this year, an increase of 67% from 2013. The next Artcurial Motorcars will be staged 6 February 2015 at the official Retromobile Salon auction in Paris.
