Theย Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is preparing to celebrate itsย 40thย year on July 15 through 24. The eventย remains one of the countryโs largest vintage race events and one of the few throughย city streets.
Begun in 1983, theย Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prixย is entering its 40thย year and features two weekends of racing. Theย first weekend is the Historics at Pittsburgh International Race Complex. Theย secondย weekend features vintage racing on a 2.33-mile road course through theย streets of Schenley Park in front of 100,000 fans and 3,000 show cars on theย Bob OโConnor Golf Course.ย Between the race weekendsย thereย are numerousย car shows, parties, rallies, and parades.
Theย PVGP is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization with a charity mission. Itsย events through the years have raised $6 million for Autism-Pittsburgh andย Merakey Allegheny Valley School for individuals withย autism and intellectualย disabilities.
Porsche Marque
Porsche is the honoredย Marque and organizers are anticipating a display of 400 Porsches on the Schenley Park Golfย Course on the July 23-24 weekend.
Porsche will be seen onย the track as well. The Historics at Pittsburgh International Race Complex willย showcase Porsches from the โ70s and โ80s up to modern Porsche GT3 Cup cars. Theย Pitt Race purpose-builtย track is 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.The roadย course in Schenley Park is a different story. The challenging stone walledย track is limited to sports cars from the โ40s, โ50s and โ60s. Porsche is best representedย by the classic 356, and vintage 914ย and 911 models.
Grandย Marshal: Ray Shaffer
Porscheโs Ray Shaffer isย coming home to serve as this year’s ย Grand Marshal. ย Ray was born and raised in theย South Hills area of Pittsburgh. Ray traces the roots of his career in the autoย industry to a chanceย meeting he had with the late Coca-Cola Porsche racer, andย Sebring 12-hour-winner, Bob Akin at the 1986 PVGP.ย Ray began his career at Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville,ย Florida and became the Generalย Manager. Ray is nowย the Porsche Classic Market Development Manager at Porsche Classic inย Atlanta.
Poster Artist: Burton Morris
Another special guestย coming back home isย internationally recognized Pop Artist, Burtonย Morris. Best known for his bold and graphic depictions of American icons, he created the 2022 PVGP posterย thatย features a Porsche 911 in the familiar red, white and blue Brumos livery.ย Burton was born and raised inย Pittsburgh and earned his fine arts degree at CMUย in 1986. Burton attended theย first PVGP in 1983ย when he was a sophomore.ย Heย vividly recalls with wonderment attending the first two yearโs races.
Honorary Race Director: Roy โFather Viperโ Sjoberg
The first Chief Engineer of Viper in 1989, who inspiredย Chrysler to shake a fire breathing 10 cylinder Viper out of a 4-cylinder K-Carย company is this year’s Honorary Race Director, Roy Sjoberg. He wasย recruitedย from General Motors in 1985 after 25 years at GM and being the right hand toย Zora Arkus-Duntov, who gave Roy the name “Father Viperโ. Royย Sjoberg is a notable keynote speaker on engineering,ย technical and teamย building and motivational subjects. He has been a consultant to the U.S.ย Air Force and ARPA on lean product design and teamย concepts.
Blacktie & Tailpipes Gala
The formal affair that kicks off the PVGP is moving to the Grandย Concourse Restaurant for the first time. This Friday night party on July 15ย features a car show at Station Square. Sponsor Bobby Rahal isย auctioning a tripย to the 2023 Indy 500 to raise funds for the event’s charities.
The Passport to Elegance Party
This year’s hangar party lands at the Pittsburgh-Butlerย Regional Airport and will take guests through the growth and innovation of theย past 100 years while immersing them in the beauty and evolution of ourย automotive and aviation heritage. This festive party features scrumptiousย passed hors devours, strolling food stations and top-shelf open bars. Theย evening will also include live big band music, silent and liveย auctions.
Schenley Parkย Race Weekend
The highlight of the Grand Prix is the July 23/24ย weekend in Schenley Park. 3,000 show cars parked on the golf course along withย sponsor tents and 100,000 weekend spectators watching the nationโs onlyย wheel-to-wheelย vintage street race. British legends like MG, Triumph and Jaguarย racing against the German racers of Porsche and BMW.
Charity
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix was built on andย continues to support charity. Since 1983 over $6 million has been donated toย Autism-Pittsburgh and Merakey Allegheny Valley School. Both organizationsย supply volunteers to assist 1,000 PVGP volunteers to drive this event.
