Where I live I often see an Alvis TA 14 โ€œwoodie,โ€ the ownerโ€™s sole car. It has no catalytic converter and โ€œeconomyโ€ is not a word you associate with its fuel consumption. It is enough to bring tears to the eyes of an eco-warrior, but the owner is a distinguished naturalist who writes on country matters for my local paper.

It may seem odd, a naturalist driving an inefficient car, but he knows what he is doing. His Alvis consumed very little energy in its making because most of it was built by hand and something that lasts 60 years beats six cars which last 10.
