VIDEO: Henry Catchpole Tests the Mustang RTR Spec 5

A compelling alternative to Ford’s range-topping Mustang GTD?

In the latest episode of Hagerty’s “The Driver Seat,” Henry Catchpole samples the RTR Spec 5, a $160,000 Ford-sanctioned Mustang that offers a compelling alternative to more extreme, track-focused models like the GTD, Dark Horse SC, and Shelby Super Snake. Created by drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr., RTR—short for “Ready to Rock”—blends aggressive styling with a driver-focused experience.

Powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter Coyote V8 producing 870 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque, the Spec 5 delivers immense performance with smooth, manageable power delivery. Unlike the GTD, it offers a six-speed manual gearbox, enhancing driver engagement. The exhaust note leans more toward a classic V8 rumble than forced-induction theatrics.

While its widebody design draws inspiration from drift cars rather than traditional race machines, the real highlight lies beneath. A finely tuned suspension setup with adjustable coilovers and sway bars provides excellent feedback, balance, and control, making the car approachable yet thrilling at the limit.

Though it lacks the pedigree of factory-backed track specials, the RTR Spec 5 stands out as a thoughtfully engineered, fun-first Mustang that prioritizes driving feel as much as outright performance.
