skyline's have 280hp b/c of a hp restriction, they have been known to produce over 1000hp with the same block, and the RB series engine is one of the only performance engines never to be blown, i've heard of RB engines approaching 2,000hp and still holding up (never seen or anything, no proof, just heard of). plus the skyline is one of the best handling factory cars ever made.... that is what the deal is with the skyline, no, 280hp isn't that much, but if you just remove the restrictions i believe it gets to about 500hp without any other changes.

  2. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

Restriction?! All factory stock cars are restrcited (yes, even Ferraris and Porsches). The thing that makes all car manufacturers put restrictors on their cars are called laws. There are laws concerning noise, safety (Ford would've built a V6 Focus if the damn heavy engine just would've passed crash tests in the small chassis) and pollution control. That's why all cars equipped with cold-air intakes and free-flowing mufflers make more horsepower that stock versions. That's why every engine can make more power with a re-mapped ECU.
Let's stop kidding ourselves and not call any stock Skylines restricted. They're just like any other factory cars, compromised.

  3. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

just because you believe that they will make 500hp without these "restrictions" (i guess you mean govenors and running it on straight pipes) i really doubt that

as for the 1000 hp on the same block
    so what
you can make over 1000 hp on a corvette block too and on most other cars depending on how much money you wanna spend
plus you can make all sorts of engines with almost any block (ex. the Tucker car made back in the 50's(pretty sure it was the 50's i know it was sometime around then) used the engine block from a helicopter engine

and couldn't AWD possibly slow you down in some turns because you can't power slide?
the slalom speed would definately be better(ex. audi rs6 67.8 mph vs. Benz E55 AMG 66.5 mph (motortrend))

  4. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

for that last one i ment the slalom speed for the AWD would be better just in case anyone got confused....

  5. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

The facts are that civis are GAY. and a Corvette is awesome!!!!

  6. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

The facts are that a Civic is a family sedan and a Corvette is high performance sports car. Sure you can get Civics fast, but you can do the same to a minivan.

  7. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

What idiot started to compare the two cars. z06 would kill any civic.

  8. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

really i mean how can that little jap ever keep up on the strip or the track. i like jap cars but that forum is just stupid.

  9. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

duh a z06 can take a civic. congrats your a fool for comparing the 2. lets see : 16k family car vs 50k high proformance sports car. lotsa sense eh? how bout i test my dads suburban vs a CGT.

also. the z06 cannot handle for the guy that said it before. it can grip, it cannot handle, much like the old viper (new one does both). the z06 is a beast to turn. theoretically it is good, which is why many mags get nice numbers out of it, but for the non pro, its very dificult, and that is why the z06 cannot compare to a turbo.

  10. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

maybe he's wrong about the R34 V-spec but the 2002 R34 Nur sure does pump out 480hp with limiter removed and will have more torque then the Viper Str-10

  11. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

i hear 440-460 and yes it is 100% true.

  12. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

Good point! next time somebody says "Well i dropped [X] amount of money into my civic and it'll kick your cars ass!" ill just say yeah well gimmie 50 grand and ill make a minivan faster than your civic lol. hm..

  13. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

    It's not a limiter...

It's a fuel map and solenoid control.

...and the N1 does make 450PS from the factory. It's about 3k dollars more than the Vspec because it has a number of lightweight body parts....

  14. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

    ARGH!

I NEVER COMPARED THE TWO!!! I CREATED THIS FORUM AS A REACTION TO PEOPLE COMPARING CIVICS AND VETTES!!!

I even stated I know what would happen! read the friggin posts!

As for the guy who said a skyline has 500BHP when destricted try 380. As everyone knows Jap manufacturers have a gentlemens agrreement of 280BHP. yet everyone knows that most are over. Read Clarkson's book on top100 cars.

He states its fact, "that by delimiting the Skyline by changing its ECU (normally a 10-20BHP upgrade) it realises the car to 160+mph from its resticted 112, and creates 380BHP, the same as a Ferrari 355! Superb!"

so yes it is restricted due to the Jap Gov. law of 112mph limit for cars, as well as the gentlemens agreement of 280BHP. NOt just by emissions, thats entirely different.

NOW STOP POSTING! this thread was meant to shut people up who compare the two not stem 45 replies!!!

And BTW a Firebird and beat an f50 around a track anyday!

Oh yeah, the z06 is amazing! Love the exhaust note.

  15. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

If you haven't figured out by now, the Indy forums always get sidetracked. I correct misinformation when I see it. I don't particularly care what the thread topic is.

I also don't need to read Clarkeson's book. I've been working on GTR's for over six years and am well aware of what they are capable of. I have an inkling that Clarkeson's assistant didn't have much experience with Nissan's ECU.....

  16. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

    well it was an R33.

but still 100BHP increase is pretty sweet.

What do you know/do? what kinds of thiings and increases have you achieved, especially via ECU upgrades?

  17. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

The ECU for the R32 and R33 are identical. The R34 is a tad more complicated.

The first ECU we played with was on a '96 R33 V-Spec. We made 349HP at the wheels (simply remapping for more power). Playing with it a little more, and allowing more boost (1.0 bar), we were able to make 20 more HP to the wheels. We stopped there as the duty cycle for the injectors was very high....thus risking detonation. After adding exhaust, injectors, and a real boost controller, he was making over 400 at the wheels on 1.2bar.

I'm making 420 to the wheels on the stock ECU. The stock ECU is very robust...even able to handle over 400HP on U.S. pump gas (which it obviously was not designed for).

  18. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

thats pretty good. but i still dont see how Clarksons people didnt know what they were doing as you only got a bit more power AFTER including an exhaust injectors etc.

still you cant grumble with 400BHP how ever you get it.

and this Vette has it stock.

  19. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

349HP at the wheels is around 430HP at the crank.

369HP at the wheels is around 450HP at the crank.

Both of those were prior to any aftermarket modifications, or removing any parts from the car (such as CAT, Air box, etc...)

  20. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

actually the best handeling cars are a 50/50 weight distribution rwd cars... awd is more of a rally event or to get a good jump at a start of a race....but in the end a rwd car with good tires will out perform an awd car of the line and all the way down a 1/4 track....... as for what car would win? I'd put my money on the vette, but to be honest i don't know how much power the r34 has.... i've heard random things from 280 stock to about 450 or something..... i'm not sure if there is an american version and a japanies version and that's why there is a such a diff or what......

  21. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

Not true at all...especially without taking into account the type of AWD.

USUALLY, an AWD vehicle is heavier than its RWD counterpart, giving the RWD better corner manners....but it certainly isn't always the case.

The EVO and STI, for example, are as light as many RWD performance cars. They are known as two of the best handling production cars in the world, often outrunning cars with far more power on tight tracks.

If you think the Z06 is good with RWD...it would be all that much better with a variable AWD system to put more power to the ground earlier coming out of the corners.

  22. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

The stock R34 has 276hp and weighs more than the Z06, so the Z06 is bound to win. Getting the power/weight ratio on the Skyline to match the Z06, and it would be a different contest.

  24. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

sorry it took so long to respond work & a family life takes a lot out of me. as far as your comment goes. maybe.... I've tried to do some research, but it's to hard because I see some sites say that a 50/50 car that's light weight with wide tires in the rear would own any awd system and i see arguments that say an awd would own any car with a rwd set up in handeling...... both make valid points.... but since no car that i'm aware of that comes in both awd & rwd has been compared to it self I couldn't make a valid argument one way or another about the handleing so I'll just give it to you, in hopes of that you know what you are talking about. The one thing I do find is that @ the wheels the awd has a much bigger % loss, and when you start talking about cars with over 500 hp that's a lot more power lost in the drivetrain.

  25. Re: 02 CIVIC TYPE-R vs 02 Z06 the facts

....and quoting myself ..."Not true at all...especially without taking into account the type of AWD."

Not all forms of AWD lead to high drive-train losses. This was a large advantage of the GTR/959 systems....
