Re: 18 cylinders only 550 hp with 18 cylinders, no matter how small, it should and must put out more that 550hp in a car. see, even with the 16/4, 1001 hp is nothing 4 a 16 cylinder wit 4 turbos, wit that it should have about 1200ph if its tuned right, but then again i dont design super cars so maybe theres an explaiation with the 550hp
Re: 18 cylinders only 550 hp It's already been mentioned I know... this W-18 isn't turbocharged or supercharged at all. Also, the 16/4 is going to be produced (I think it's going to cost 1 million US, according to Car and Driver), but this isn't, it's just a concept. I guess most of Bugatti's potential buyers agreed they'd rather have a quad-turbo W-16 than this 18.

Re: 18 cylinders only 550 hp I dont know why all you poeple are surprised, its logic..if it has 18 cylinders and only puts out 550 hp did it ever occure that maybe the cylinders in the engine are quite smaller than average? Another example of this type of engine would maybe be the Aston Martin Vanquish which packs a V-12 but puts out 450hp. And for the guy that compared this engine to a modified V-8 with a blower and other accesories is a moron

Re: 18 cylinders only 550 hp Easy with the caps-lock key dude... To answer your question. No, the displacement isn't expecially small. Remember, the Bugatti EB-110 was powered by a 3.5 liter V-12. Small displacement means small reciprocating parts like pistons, con-rods and valves. This, in turn means higher/smoother revving and (ironically) more peak power. As to the output being low... Remember, this is a luxury car. Designing an engine is a balancing act. You can't have lots of power AND refinement. You have to compromise. Cosworth got 500bhp and more from the 2 liter engines in the Ford Escort "Cossies". But they were loud, harsh and tempermental.
Re: 18 cylinders only 550 hp why why WHY do all these people (the quote is just na example) fail to notice what's important here? no 550hp doesn't have to be a typo (as suggested earlier on the forum).. and why do all these people only compare no. of cylinders and power? the engine is 6,2l and MANY cars of similar displacement reach similar figures. the amount of cylinders is not the point here cause it's possible to even get over 1000hp with 6cylinders. PLUS.. 6,2l divided by 18 cylinders give a reasonably small displacement per cylinder, which means the piston, rods etc are lighter and reaction times of the engine are much shorter than in engines with larger displ/cylinder where a much larger weight has to be put into motion... which results in better performance <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> and isn't that what we want? anyway, as written before - it is just a concept, never meant for production and concepts usually serve to show the direction in which a company wants to evolve or (as probably in this case) its capabilities.. and in this bugatti has succeeded.

One thing I have to agree with you is that the 18 cylinder sucks big time, it should at least ge more than 750plus hp out of a 18 cylinder.
