1956 Continental Mark II Convertible

  1. Y'know, sometimes people say things and they creep into the back of your mind and rest there until they drive you insane.

That's what your license plate comment did to me. It made me realize that I hated it, too. When I wrecked the car the insurance company only wanted to pay to paint one side of the car. I learned that paint two-stage over lacquer doesn't work well on a car that you plan on keeping.

I convinced Hagerty that it was in their best interest to paint the whole car since they weren't willing to give me a lifetime guarantee on blending the paint. The whole car was taken to bare metal and built up into an extraordinarily nice paint job.

The owner of the shop runs the Meadow Brook Concours and invited the car for this year's show. He made sure the car was perfect. He called as they were finishing the car and told me that he needed another week because the front bumper didn't turn out perfect.

It was then that your comment sprung forth and I said, "Y'know, I'd sure like to see that front license plate bracket go away". The holes were welded up, the bumper refinished and I have to say that I thank you for voicing your opinion.

  2. Way to go basman! Unfortunately Rhode Island forces us to mount a front plate on all cars. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/sad.gif"></A> I hope you weren't hurt in that wreck, barry. The pre-A looks like it pulled though beautifully though.

We were fine. Although the wreck happened in the middle of freeway traffic we luckily didn't tangle with any other vehicles.

I hit the drivers side rear of the trailer with the center concrete divider then hit a guard rail with the F-450 and the trailer. When we hit the guardrail the Porsche tore loose and slammed up against the inside of the trailer almost blowing out the side wall.

The brand new weight equalizing hitch came apart and forced the truck to veer hard left. The only thing that save us were the huge disc brakes on the trailer.

I've documented the entire build of the trailer from it's beginnings as a 35-foot travel trailer from the early '50s. The crash and rebuild pictures are near the end. Beware, dial-up users!

    I'd like to start a thread on the subject but I don't have enough posts yet. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/sad.gif"></A>

  5. Barry sorry for my tardyness on the Cont article; I've been busy doing all the event coverage for sc.net. Hopefully a crew of us will drive from Montreal to Meadowbrook, maybe we can meet up the event.

In the mean while, I'll try to get your car included. It certainly deserves a spot, thanks for your patience.

That incident sounds scary, alot of weight being tossed around there. Hagerty seem like a good company.

  6. I'll say. They didn't really bat an eye. The damages to the trailer was $43,000, tow vehicle $4,500 and the Porsche $25,000. All it cost me was a pair of underwear. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/sad.gif"></A> I had just insured the trailer two days before the accident. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

Thanks, I'd like to be included in your database. The Porsche is in the Meadow Brook show. That would be cool to hook up there.

  8. You have great taste in cars barry. Do you own a 1957 chrysler 300c btw?

  9. No I don't. My wife is the major Mopar fan, though. Our Prom car was a brand new 440 6-pack RT Challenger convertible in Plumb Crazy with a white top and interior. It was a borrowed car, but the baddest at the Prom.

I only have room in my collection for things that carry the Continental name. I dream of acquiring a 1953 Cunningham C-3 Continental. It does have a Chrysler 331 Hemi drive train with an Italian body. There were only 5 or 6 convertibles made.

  11. I recruited Bob Lutz's '53 C-3 Coupe for the Willistead Classic held in Windsor, Ontario. It took "best European". This year I recruited his '71 Monteverdi 375 for the Krasl Art Center Concours held in St. Joseph, MI. I'm on the executive board of both shows.

  12. Those r sum h0t whipz

  13. He's got some awesome toys. I wasn't able to post pictures of them from the office for some reason.

Someone gave me a heads-up that pictures of my car were published in a magazine called Makes and Models. It's a very high quality magazine that combines fine cars and women. It's not lewd but it is fairly hot.

The problem is that they never contacted me nor did they credit me with the article nor did they credit the photographer. It appears that there are no credits on any of their articles.

I mean, I love the exposure, but don't you think they should have asked first?

  15. That's awesome! <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/grin.gif"></A> I'm looking forward to pics with a clean fron bumper and without the plate. I think it will look much better <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

Edit: How long ago did that accident happen?

  17. Here you go.

  18. Last September. I crashed it and the custom trailer into a guard rail.

  19. That Continental is a stunnung car, wow!

  20. That looks perfect, Barry <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> It came out beautifull (and not just the front).

  21. This was my favorite picture. Now that's a paint job.

Sorry Barry, but that magazine looks incredibly lame:

    http://www.makesandmodels.com/september2006.php

I'd be angered to have my expensive collector's car featured in a magazine featuring semi naked women around hot cars. It's so tacky and in poor taste...

    http://www.makesandmodels.com/mmextra.php

And why the hell is the article featuring your car linking to http://www.mountdoraestatejewelry.com/ ???? If that "article" is an advertisement, they're using your car to profit and I'm sure you can start legal actions against the magazine or that jewelry company...

lol wut @ that website. I wasn't expecting it to be that tacky. But yeah, you're totally right.

  25. I sent an e-mail to the publisher. I doubt if they'll respond.

I guess I don't mind it so much. I'm just a publicity whore.

I got the Mark II back today. Now I have a full garage again. It was weird having empty spaces all winter.
