1973 Porsche 914/4 2.0 VS 1984 Honda Prelude

  1. I got my license recently and ended up with a 1984 Honda Prelude (Stock). I have no intention of modifying it, its already powerful enough. It smokes my parent's '97 Toyota Tercel Coupe. I like the Porsche 914 alot (might buy one some day), and my Prelude is about the same size, maybe a little bigger, and is even of a similar shape. It also has 100 HP. The top speed is somewhere in the range of 120 MPH. Which do you think would win a race? I think it would be pretty close, but I'm not sure which would come on top.

    probably the Prelude in there stock condition, however the 914's performance potential is through the roof! It's ultra small, RWD, midengine, flat boxter engine (a 3.6litre Porsche engine is a perfect fit for this car). It got a lower center of gravity than a NSX, Fiero, MR2 from anyyear, plus it's lighter than all of them as well.

    You probably wont belive this, but it's true... A guy that live a few miles away from me modified his 914. He put a Chevy 350 engine into his 914. Plus a crazy bodykit on it. He needed this new bodykit because his car goes over 200MPH!!! Selling it for $25,000 Canadian.

    Don't let anyone tell you differently, if you have the spending power of a bum, but want the performance of a Lotus Esprit or better, but a Porsche 914. It's very cheap, and a few thousanddollars later you can have a true sports exotic to beat all thoughs mustangs and acuras with.

    The Honda Prelude would probably win the race because the Porsche 914 only has 84 horsepower. Also the Porsche 914 has a (If I remembered correctly) 20some second 0-60 and I believe that the Prelude's is probably a little bit faster. The Preludewould probably win if it was a straightaway but if it was a twisty course I am unsure because 914 don't handle as greatly as most other Porsche's

    oh really? 914's don't handle as well as other porsches, bulls***. i personally have one and it handles very well. low center of gravity and excellent weight distribution.

    I agree that the Prelude would win in a straight line, but the 914 definitely would take it in the turns. I own a 75 914 and an 01 Boxster and the 914 is much more of a driver's car as it provides way better feedback than the Boxster. As a result, you can push the 914 closer to it's limits than the Boxster. In other words, in the middle of a high-G turn, the Boxster will hang in there and mute all feedback until it decides to swing it's rear out where the 914 provides more road feel.

    I've tangled with mid-80's Hondas and had no major difficulties shuttin' 'em down, straight-line or otherwise; it's all on how you're set-up. You can't do anything about "cheater" systems (NOS, etc.); but remember, they can't keep those systems "ON" constantly.

    A well-tuned 914 2.0L can put out 100hp; that, along with its lower weight, can make a good account of itself. It's all about picking your battles, just don't get too cocky.

    I had a 1974 1.8 that had a destroyed engine. I dropped a modded 2.0 into it.. twin carbs, cammed, ported heads and headers... turned a mild car into a beast.. Do not let anybody tell you differently, a 914 will hand even a modern 911 it's arse in the handling department. There simply never has been a better handling car for so litle money.

    these cars are great in stock form, but... an '84 prelude would beat it in a straight line. Twisty road course is a whole other ball game.

    I have a '74 914 that started life as a 1.8 with L-jet fuel injection (evil.) cranking out a whopping 76 hp and 90 lb-ft of torque. $2500 and a weekend of engine building fun and I've got a 2270cc motor in the car that puts out about 145hp and about 165 lb-ft. of torque... in a 2000 pound car. Thats more than enough to spank an '84 prelude <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> So long to a 14+ second 0-60 and hello 6 seconds flat!

    As for handling, these cars are INSANE. They go even crazier with mods. Mine is currently stock suspension on 195/60R15 BFG Traction T/A's and it handles incredibly. I drove one with Bilstien shocks and struts and 140# springs in the rear... 2 words: race car. There's a guy around here that has one fully race prepped (hoosier autocross tires, koni adjustable suspension, 180# springs, 22mm sway bars) and it pulled .98 g's on a skidpad. thats rediculous and the whole suspension setup cost around $2500-$3000. Not bad.
