News Flash! 25-Nov-2004 01:26 AM EST: Glimpse of the Sky Automotive News / November 29, 2004 Saturn's first roadster finally has a name: Sky. Saturn revealed the name Monday, Nov. 29, when it released the first sketches of the rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Saturn says the Sky shows the new design cues that will appear across Saturn's product lineup. The Sky will debut at the Detroit auto show in January. The car will be built at GM's Wilmington, Del., assembly plant. It will arrive at Saturn retailers in early 2006. ps: i think it looks better than the concept GM revealed awhile back, it looked awful, this NEW 2006 SATURN SKY looks a lot better, much like the Lotus/Opel/Vauxhall speedsters...
Hey, thanks for the info Xzotyqar. Sounds like a rebaged Soltice to me. 5 years ago who would've guessed that Saturn would be a real player in GM's game, while Oldsmobile got knocked off. Crazy things happen at GM everyday! Knowing that, I'm just holding my breath till the camaro comes back and takes clam of the pony cars once again.
November 29, 2004? Talk about going back to the future. Anyway It looks more like the new Opel Tigra with a new badge, and no, that one only shares its seat frames with the Solstice so they are different cars. Now the Tigra is quite small for American Standars though, but it makes sense to put it in the Saturn entry-level lineup.
that looks based on the Vauxhall Lightning concept. I dig it. Xzotyqar, do you still worship the Pointek SPortec? DO you still have that site dedicated to it?
sky shows the new design cues that will appear across Saturn's product lineup finally, Saturn's current lineup are tremendously ugly
saturn has the coolest badge of any car maker. Whoa it's cool. Nice car, too. wish they were making the VX Lightning concept.
Piontek Sportech! hi innotech! how have things been on this forum? yeah, geocities booted out my website quite awhile back and i've not put it back up since then; i still have my old files and pics. i do not know whether GC did this due to low traffic or just due to copyright content issues simply due to restructuring. they never informed me. either way, this car is still a benchmark in my head even though it has now been pushed down the 'top 30' or so fast cars at this supercars.net website. Dave Piontek (I believe he's still working with FORD Racing last I corresponded with; apart from relation to that golf-kart looking vehicle 'funcar'.) still has his small website on the last remaining car he has; priced quite a bit higher and, oops, the car is SOLD. Here's his link: http://www.funcar.com/sportech/index.html someone out there is driving it. it is still hard to find a new 'benchmark' that is 'affordable' yet obscenely fast. top speed not withstanding, outright everyday acceleration to under 4 seconds is still not commonplace except for the more exotic cars or highly modded ones. i'll admit that now a open top car still is strictly a warm weather car; unless one is willing to gear up like the motorcyclists do. i wish the 'Lotus' Caterham Super-7 for North America (Canada/US) would make a more swoopy modern closed-wheel looking version instead of something so antique looking. (their prices seem more affordable) Made in BC, Canada: http://www.super7cars.ca/ US site: http://www.super7cars.com/ As for the Lotus Elise here in Canada, Lotus Cars of Canada has little info except when one goes to the UK site, it is still priced near the Corvette (~ C$73k not including interests on any GMAC loans). Still out of my $$$ reach, new: C6 Corvette Mitsubishi Evolution VIII FQ400 (UK Only) Subaru WRX STi (Canada's price is the MOST expensive model in all of Subaru of North America line up) Mitsubishi Evo VIII MR (USA) [keeping in mind i didn't like the 'sedan' look; i referred to it as 'sedanitis' syndrome; remember?] right now i've 'settled', with reliability reservations, for the Mazda6 GT V6 5MT GFX (a loaded S in USA) the swoopiest 'sedan' i could tolerate!!! comtemplated getting the Mazdaspeed Miata, but didn't knew about the AWD Mazdaspeed6, with premium gas for turbo cars, well regular is all i'm will to pay for at these high prices... have family with kids nearing college age... not enough $$$ good to hear from a familiar member. very busy so i'll pop back only occasionally. >;-] PS a fellow car enthusiast at a mazda forum showed me these pics from AUTOBILD: looks like Opel GT is Europe's KAPPA version of our Pontiac Solistice, and not either the vx220 or speedster, etc, attached:
EWWW! This makes me want to barf all over my house! Whatever happend to nice designes?!?
please explain nice designs... like the ones in your garage, or your neighbors, or friends, relatives, or, okay, something you can afford. okay, okay, something you can't afford? my idea of nice, but i can't afford, it has to be sleek and not blunt looking like a sedan or truck unfortunately, these tend to be show cars rather than production cars, and exotic cars are often compromises, so i have to realistic. i stick to sportscars only, no sport sedanitis, nor sport suv, etc. it doesn't mean i won't settle for less because that's all i can afford. oooo, here we go again... Piontek Sportech, where are you? (if only i could mod a Sportech to be a miniature Olds Aerotech, mmm that'll be nice!)
it's not the speedster/vx220 platform, but the Opel GT (kappa platform) GM Europe had to abandon the Opel GT due to new safety regs However, GM HQ in NorAm is so enamored with the Opel GT's look that they will be doing the, 2006 er, 2007 Saturn SKY Roadster (kappa) for 2006 release. as you already know, Pontiac Solistice is 'kappa' also. Look here for official GM media release: http://gm.wieck.com/forms/gm/previewpage?021999 i'll agree that i'd rather have the vx220/speedster anyday the lotus elise (older brother) is still too pricey. btw: the milky man, what do you drive anyway?
i really dont see any solstice in it, although i know they are based off the same platform it looks to be a completely unique design.
