Caparo T1 bursts into flames at 150 mph!!! :(

  1. you don't about what your car can do until you have made it and it is ready to do the business.

hence everyone gave the veyron shit until it came along and its why the koenigsegg will always be a great big turd.

  2. Personally I just don't like any of these barely-legal and utterly unuseable road cars. In fact I'm not even keen on stripped-out versions of proper road cars like the Scuderia or Superleggera.

As for everyone else, the others have a point that fanboyism and this forum's mild bias against British cars have a lot to do with the Caparo-hate.

  3. Ramping up the performance 20% is going to cost a hell of a lot more than 20% when you are talking basically a race car already. Look at the cost difference between a SR3 and a SR9, considering the Caparo will not be that much slower than the SR9.

  4.
  5. did I read that right. The Caparo slower than the SR9 ??

  6. I was giving the purpose built race car with slick racing tires the benefit of the doubt, but yea now that I think about it, the caparo may be faster.

  7. Looks like some more testing is needed, still love this car though.

    hope plato is ok

  8. Craparo LOL

Here are the dramatic pictures which show the moment when a Caparo T1 driven by Fifth Gear’s Jason Plato bursts into flames.

As Plato skids the car to a halt his helmet can be seen in the side mirror as tyre smoke pours from the front wheels.

The second photograph shows the Caparo T1 abandoned on the runway at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, still smoking from the fire which broke out at 150mph.

Earlier today we told you how Plato was testing the supercar for Fifth Gear when he was suddenly scorched by flames.

After the accident Plato said: “There was a slight loss of power, I looked in the mirror and saw some smoke, there was a slight smell of oil and then suddenly there was this intense heat.

“The car spontaneously erupted into a ball of flames and I was sat in the middle of a fireball. I hit the brakes, brought the car to a stop as quickly as I could and jumped out.

“The back of my neck is burnt and so are my face and hands. I obviously couldn’t take my hands off the steering wheel whilst braking and my right hand is more badly burnt than my left.”

Despite burns to his face, hands and the back of his neck the Seat driver has already vowed to race in the BTCC title decider, being held at Thruxton this Sunday.

Plato currently has a nine-point lead over Vauxhall’s title rival Fabrizio Giovanardi, from Italy.

Plato added: “I’ll have to dig deep, but I’m still looking forward to the BTCC finale this weekend. It’s been a hard-fought season and I’ve led the Drivers’ Championship almost unbroken since winning the opening round, so this isn’t going to stop me winning the title on Sunday.”

Plato was taken to a specialist burns unit and released later the same evening. He spent the night resting at his Oxfordshire home, before seeing a burns specialist again this morning.

The Caparo T1 is not yet on sale, but has been wowing the motoring world with its Formula One car performance for the road. Accelerating from 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds, the £210,000 T1 has a top speed of 210mph.

Plato is the latest motoring journalist to be injured while filming. Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was involved in a 288mph crash, while Fifth Gear’s Tom Ford broke three toes last month when he rolled a van.

Fifth Gear is on Channel 5 on Mondays at 8pm. This episode will be shown next week.

  16. Hehe. No, it's to bad that happened. I want to see this car in a good light.

  17. a fuel leak would cause a loss of power what are you talking about

  18. This car is so comical looking.

  19. They should mate the Craparo T1 with a firetruck, so when it catches fire,
then you could put the fire out yourself with the optional waterhose ;P!

  20.
  21. I don't remember the McLaren F1 getting trashed on like this when it had it's testing woes. Any clean sheet of paper car is going to have teething issues. Better to get them sorted now, as opposed to catching fire after they're in buyers hands... a la the CLK-GTR.
