Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

Discussion in '2000 Porsche 911 Turbo' started by TylerDurden, Sep 6, 2002.

  1. Becoming an annual event, Car & Driver tests 15 tuners and three stockers, namely, the 911 Turbo, the '02 Corvette Z06 (405bhp), and the Dodge Viper GTS ACR (460bhp). The Porsche comes out on top, in second the Viper, and third was our poor Corvette. Have a look at the test in the latest Car & Driver.

If you have a link to the article, that would be appreciated. I love to see Porsches dominate. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

Sorry, there's no web link to the article. I have the magazine, though, and if you like, I can post the times and other details sometime.

    Sure, whatever you have available.

They had a link. Let me look for it.

  6. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

Sadly the Viper was driven by an editor, not a professional like the Porsche and Corvette were. The Porsche driver could "drive a Porsche blindfolded". You read the text right? The Viper would have improved its lap times by great amounts if a professional Viper driver was driving it. It's kind of convenient you just left that part out. Oh well.

  7. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

The Dodge Viper ACR GTS is also a 460 hp car. The Porsche and 'Vette don't even come close to that power output level. What would be remarkable is if the Viper had comparable power and torque figures, and then managed to lap the 'Vette and the 996 Turbo. And please don't bring price into the equation. All three cars are either top of the line flagship models from each respective company, or, in the case of the 911 Turbo, near the top of the line. Driving a Porsche in Germany is about as expensive as driving a 'Vette or Viper in the United States; it's all relative. I'm not saying that the Viper is a bad car. On the contrary, you get amazing performance for a non-astronomical price, but I would expect a little more from a car that can put 500 lb.ft. of torque and 460 hp to the pavement.

Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

You moron Porsche is not dominating at all!!!! Look at the link:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/comparisontests/2002/september/supercars/0209_sc_challenge_opener.xml?&page=1

And guess whos on top CORVETTE!!!!!!!
And even the stock Z05 would completly smoke a stock turbo!!!!

In R&T's January '01 issue, Steve Millen drove the 360 Modena and 385-hp Z06 (among other cars) around Thunderhill Park. The 360 took first, by about 7 or 8 tenths of a second over the 2nd place Z06. Third was a 550 Maranello, and the 996 Turbo finished fourth.
Automobile Magazine tested the 360 Modena, 385-hp Z06, and 996 Turbo around Waterford Hills racetrack. The Z06 beat them both!!!!!!!!
The Z06 is faster than the Ferrari 360. Sport Auto did not test the Z06 at the Nurburgring, but they did test it at the Hockenheim club circuit. The Z06 got a 1:14.9 vs. 1:15.1 for the 360.

What in hell are you talking about? There were like a million Corvette's entered in the Supercar shoot-out and one won just because it beat Porsches best time. Did Porsche get another shot at the Corvette? No. And as for Z06 smoking the 996 Turbo it might have won in a few occasions but surely enough it didn't "smoke" it.

  12. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

OK I guess it doesnt smoke it but when I say smoke it I mean the car beat it.

    Here are the offical stats:
    Porsche Turbo = Great car <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>
    Corvette Z06 = Great car <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

I'll agree with that. Except for maybe the 996 Turbo is an excellent car because it weighs so much more then a Z06 and still agitates in ways. Z06 us a good car but dang! Do something about that interior.

  14. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

I was talking about the stock cars, not the modified ones. Remind me again, who's the moron?

  15. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

The 911 Turbo has 4wd so it would understeer a lot more than the corvette. It might post a better lap time if it was rwd - more responsive handling but less grip.

  16. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

To bad there isn't such a think that can make AWD to RWD and change it back again.

  17. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

    so its 10/90?

  18. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

I'll have to look into that and find more information on it.

  19. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

with that kind of Weight Dist., it shouldn't feel like an AWD car cuz the weight is so one-sidedly distributed.

  20. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

I know seriously...I haven't found anything yet so I'll keep searching.

  21. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

ok that's cool. LMK if you find anything.

  22. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

    40/60.

  23. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

I don't see anything wrong with more power and more torque.

Since you brought price into the equation, one of our German members said that the Z06 costs less than the nonturbo 911, even in Germany.

If you look at that C&D test, you'll see that the 911 turbo won because of its straight line speed. On the road course, they tied. They also tied at the Ring, Porsche's own backyard. In two other tests, the Z06 won by about 2 seconds, and in one of those tests, a less powerful, 2001 Z06 was used. I have yet to see a test where the 911 turbo beat the Z06 on a road course. Ofcourse performance isn't everything. I'm not saying that the Z06 is better overall. That's a matter of taste. The 911 turbo definitely uses more expensive materials in the interior, but I prefer the look of the Z06's interior. It's sporty and stylish while the 911 turbo has a bland interior.

  24. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

It depends.. The 4WD system can shift between 10 and 40% of the power to the frontwheels. That means that de major handeling characteristic is understeer, but still remeber, the porsche turbo is made to be a brilliant road car and on the road, safety is a mayor point. So understeer is the most safe way to put all that power to the ground for a "normal" person. But on track the understeer cost al LOT of time, so it isn't particulair special that a rear engine car like the corvette is faster on a track. But i would like to see both car drive on a normal street. The porsche can even beat a car like a Lamborghini Murcielargo on twisty roads!!

But i have to say, i love cars like the corvette... simpel, honest, cheap (wel a cheap supercar) and reliable.....

  25. Re: Car & Driver Supercar Challenge

There actually is a button on the center console that changes the 4WD to RWD and back again.
