What in your mind is the definition of/defines a supercar?
First thing that comes to mind
I agree with Lucky Strike.
I don't think it can be defined reliably. For every definition, there will be notable exceptions. It has to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
a supercar is car with a design that stands out from the rest and offers above average performance and above average materials (carbonfiber, etc)and looks stunning with no regards to beauty and price tags that require the average guy to steal from several banks to pay for a monthly payment.
Nissan Gt-R is a Super Car.
The Pagani Zonda is a Supercar.
a supercar is one that has a very specific function, and fulfills that function above and beyond it's rivals.
holy shit, i love this pic
I think they have to be the absolute expression of what a manufacturer can do at any given time.
The absolute top rung of the ladder for each manufacturer.
But then, they have to be uber-sportscars as well, because things like a Phantom aren't supercars.
Also performance matters, a lot, but it discounts the fact that manufacturers can make cars as fast as established supercars, such as the Ariel Atom, which isn't a supercar.
The F40 is perhaps the clearest visual and mental description of a supercar I must agree.
A high performance car that kids dream about at night. kinda how I judge a 'supercar' (not that I really care about labels).
over 150K euros
corvette, miata, mz4, sports car. DBS, supercar.
Land cruiser, defender, functional SUV. Bowler Wildcat, supercar.
It can't have a cheaper version. The GT2 isn't a supercar because it's based on the 911. The ZR1 isn't a supercar because it's based on the Corvette.
It must be the top of the line model of that particular company. This includes past models. The Scud isn't a supercar because it's a second tier model compared to the Enzo, even though the Enzo isn't built anymore. This is based on the assumption that junior supercars aren't real supercars.
It must be faster than any other company's junior supercar. If the new McLaren can't beat the 458, then it's a junior supercar like the 458.
It must be rare. I can't put a production # on this but it must be fairly rare.
It doesn't have to be pretty. I think we can all agree that the Veyron is a supercar, even those of us who know it's ugly.
Are supercar and exotic the same? Cause I think so.
Exotic: Exspensive, exclusive and extraordinary. And the 200+mph tag helps too.
To me, a Honda NSX, Nissan GT-R, and Chevy Corvettes aren't supercars. They are really high end sports cars, but I wouldn't consider them a supercar.
A supercar makes you wonder: "Is that a celebrity driving that?"
Dodge Caravan =/= supercar
Toyota Prius =/= supercar
etc. etc. etc.
A minivan's function is not to be a minivan. no minivan is the result of wanting to be a minivan. It has a specific function, and that function, if we can come to some consensus as to what it is, I am 95% positive is served by some supercar under my own definition.
and citing the prius frankly isn't trying hard enough. you and I both know whether you want to list it as efficiant or environmentally friendly or even by the silliest "minivan" function of just being electric, there is a supercar (under my definition) that should be in it's place.
I see you have three etc at the end of your post. I challenge you to give 3 more examples I can exploit <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>
First of all, sir, your explanation doesn't quite make sense. A minivan's function is to be a minivan. The Caravan does it best. What supercar under your definition fulfills this purpose? A hybrid econocar's function is to be a hybrid econocar. The Prius does it best. What supercar under your definition fulfills this purpose?
Tesla Roadster =/= supercar
Ford Excursion =/= supercar
original VW beetle =/= supercar
All have a VERY specific purpose, and are engineered to perform a specific role better than any other car. Yet, they are not supercars. It takes more than that to make a supercar.
no car's function is simply to be anything. functions are tasks, not adjectives or nouns, they are verbs. A shoe's function is not to shoe. understand that first, and then we'll talk. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>
