F1 2014 Guessing Game

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Bugatti4evr, Mar 7, 2014.

  1. Hi all

Every year, the Motorsport section has run a guessing game/tipping competition on the Formula One season. This year, we will be running it in General Chat in the hopes that new players will join in.

Everyone is free to enter at any time during the season, and is free to pick for as few or many rounds as they choose. The contest has been designed to be low involvement, and an in-depth knowledge of the sport is not required, so I encourage everyone to give it a go.

    Stangman, can you sticky this?
  2. How to Play

Predict the top 8 finishers in each Grand Prix
-Points are awarded based on how closely each picked driver finishes the race compared to your picked position.
-Simply post your picks in this thread

    Round: Australia
    VET (Vettel)
    RIC (Ricciardo)
    HAM (Hamilton)
    ROS (Rosberg)
    ALO (Alonso)
    RAI (Raikonen)
    MAS (Massa)
    BOT (Bottas)

    PC: insert pick here

    Either format is acceptable

-The points are awarded as follows:

    Correct Guess = 10 points
    1 place difference = 7 points
    2 place difference = 5 points
    3 place difference = 3 points
    4 place difference = 1 point
Greater than four places = 0 points

This gives a theoretical maximum score of 80.

Additionally, each round features a PC (Predicta Crazy), where players must guess the result of a random event from the weekend.

For example, the PC for Round 1 will be:
    Number of retirements from race.
If 4 drivers do not finish the race, the correct guess is 4.

The 3 closest guesses to the actual result will be awarded bonus points as follows:
    1st place = 10 points
    2nd place = 7 points
    3rd place = 5 points

If there is a tie, all tied players will be awarded points for the position they are tied for. If two players are tied for 1st, the next closest guess will be awarded 3rd. If two players tie for 2nd, no 3rd place will be awarded. If 3 or more players tie for any top three position, they will all be awarded points.

Points from each round are aggregated, with the season winner being the person with the highest score.

Picks for any round are currently open, and picks for each round close at the beginning of the first session of qualifying (which is held on Saturday).
Picks made after the beginning of qualifying will only be eligible for 1/2 points and may not be eligible for the PC if the result can be determined from qualifying.
Players who miss a round will have their previous pick used, and will incur a 25% penalty (only 75% of their points will count toward their total), with scores rounded to the nearest 0.5.

    Good luck!

  4. I'll start off, just to give everyone an example.

The round is Australia and the PC is "number of retirements"

    Round: Australia

    PC: 6
  5. Australia:

I did not place Vettel because I hope he loses.
  6. So fking hard to pick, even after all the testing. Anyways, here goes:

    PC: 6 retirements
  7. Are we doing the first round in this thread?

Anyway if anyone wants to get into F1 this is a good way to get involved. Personally it took me 2-3 races before I "got" it sometime ago.
  8. Yeah, if people include the round they are picking in their post, this one thread can last all year (until it reaches page 60).
  9. Australia
    PC: 5

Looks like Hamilton is an early favourite, then!

    EDIT: forgot 8th place
  10. I say people's picks should carry over to the next round if they fail to make new picks in time... meaning that people who miss the odd round will never be at too much of a disadvantage and won't be completely left behind.
  11. Btw dude you only picked 7 of the top 8
  12. oh shit. let me edit
  13. I would sticky this, but if I recall, new members can't see sticky threads.

Like we get tons of new members here, right? <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/tongue.gif"></A>
  14. We can do that. I'll have to think about exactly how that will affect the scoring. There should be an incentive for people to be making picks, but not a disincentive for casual players to continue playing. A fine line.

The inclusion of the round in the pick is to ensure that I know which round someone is picking for, since it will all be contained in one thread.
  15. Hamilton

    4 retirements
  16. Great initiative bugatti, I think this will make us bond together more than ever
  17. Rosberg
    PC: 4
  18. dont do this on general chat, please

it clogs up the layout after so many pages. do it on the racing forum
  19. all the other f1 guessing games were on there too.
  20. We want to try it this year to see if more members would participate.
  21. but but but, nobody watches f1!
  22. I know. The only races I watch are Canada, United States and Brazil. The other races are too late or too early at night.
  23. Yeah... maybe a 10% penalty or something?
  24. Luv u guyzz =3
