For all y'all that build stuff

  1. I've been doing a bit of work with these guys - http://www.may-cad.org/en/p1.htm and the basic idea is you download their software, build whatever with aluminum profiles (expensive but sturdy/good) and then they ship it to you and you assemble it. I figured it might be of use to some of yous here.

I included an image that gives you a quick idea of what it looks like.

  2. You're right, that is expensive

  3. The software and design idea is great. Like really cool.
The problem comes in where I could build this exact design out of angle iron/steel for about 500$ including materials, media blasting and powder coating. If I'm already having to assemble it I may as well actually build it from scratch. I love tinkering with my welder and what not.
Yes yes angle iron would make it 3 times heavier. But it would also be 3 times as durable.

  4. If it's from aluminum extrusion with t-slots, the main advantage is there's lots of hardware out there made to fit standard t-slot widths. If you don't need any of that hardware, a weldment is way more sense.

  5. Thanks for the link. The cost might not matter for smaller objects.
