    Hakkinen to attend Barcelona test
    28 November 2006

Mika Hakkinen is due to attend testing at Barcelona tomorrow amid speculation that he might actually test the McLaren car. The former champion has spent some time in McLaren's simulator and there is speculation he might try the car out this week or next.

"It's only rumours," Hakkinen told Spanish newspaper Marca. "My goal is still to race in DTM but if McLaren call me to help them I'll do it with great pleasure."

Hakkinen has spent some hours in the team's simulator at Woking in recent weeks.

  3. never, what a tool
  4. this is seriously stupid. Don't get me wrong, when Hakkinen was racing he was a great driver and a well deserved double world champion. But he's been out of F1 for more than 5 years, theres no way he'll be able to do anything in testing productively - let alone RACING as some rumour-makers were suggesting.
  5. i can just picture it, MH wearing a skirt with pom poms in his hands chearing/helping the team <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/tongue.gif"></A>

Former world champion Mika Hakkinen will climb back behind the wheel of a Formula One car on Thursday as part of this week's winter test programme with McLaren.

The Finn, whose last competitive F1 race was the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix, recently asked the team if he could re-familiarize himself with an F1 car and McLaren officials jumped at the chance to tap into his experience as they continue to develop the 2007 edition of the MP4 model.

"I have followed the Formula 1 World Championship closely since my retirement at the end of the 2001 season, but it was when I was at this year's Brazilian Grand Prix as a guest of the team that I really felt I would like to get a chance to drive a Formula 1 car again," said Hakkinen, who has competed in the German DTM series the past few years. "I have recently spent some time in Team McLaren Mercedes' simulator in Woking and to get the possibility to drive the MP4-21 is something I'm really looking forward to."

Both sides stress that the test is simply a means to get more experienced feedback and not a prelude to something more.

"This test is a chance for me to see how much Formula 1 cars have advanced and experience first hand what they are like to drive today as well as providing the team with some feedback on various aspects of the car's performance," said Hakkinen.

"A driver of Mika's calibre and experience can only bring added value to our testing programme and his feedback after Thursday's running will be valuable to the team in our preparations for the 2007 season," added McLaren boss Ron Dennis. "However at this stage there are no plans for Mika to conduct further tests for the team."

McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa and rookie Lewis Hamilton are currently taking part in the three day test session in Barcelona.
