Hasn't this car been taken out of LeMans now?

Discussion in '1999 Mercedes-Benz CLR' started by Rzeractor, Aug 10, 2002.

  1. Correct me if im wrong but didnt this car get removed from LeMans alltogether?
And also, did the Mercedes CLK-GTR ever race in Lemans?

Yes. This car had to be withdrawn from the race due to safety hazards. Two of them flipped; one in practice and one during the race, and the final team car was taken out altogether. Too bad. It was a great disappointment for Mercedes-Benz and could have won the race if it didn't have those flaws.

    It flipped, just amazing

  5. Re: Hasn't this car been taken out of LeMans now?

Yeah flipped a few times. Flipped during trials, during practice, and during the race.
Merc tried to fix the issue by applying these "winglets" to the front of the car, in an attempt to inprove downforce. Seemed to work for a while. The CLR was very fast. And it made a sound that was half Nascar and half refined German.
This was a great year for motor racing. Manufacturer interest was at it's peak. Everybody wanted a piece. Toyota, Audi, Ford/Panoz, Bimmer, Mercedes, Chrysler, Saleen, Callaway,Porsche, and others. All at the top of their games, bar Porsche. Porsche did not bring out the GT1, bummer. Air restriction putting an early end to possible Porsche year after year victories.

The CLR looked like it was bouncing at Le Mans. Though it was obviously significantly quicker than the nearest competitor. Reliable as well. Spelled the end for Merc at Le Mans. Doubt we will ever see Merc rounding Virage Arnage again.

    I'm missing the silver arrows at Le Mans. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/sad.gif"></A>
