Heavy!!!

Discussion in '1993 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe ZR1' started by 70SuperBee, Aug 9, 2002.

  1. This is a very nice car. I want one bad. Overviewing this, I noticed the weight. Why is it so damn heavy? It gained 300 lbs. Other than that, hell of a car.

    ANY THOUGHTS?<!-- Signature -->

They came with a lot of goodies, which weighed the car down. I used to have one.

They were one of the most advanced cars of their day. They had these valet keys that you could use when you let someone drive it, it limited the horsepower.

They had selective ride control, Touring, Sport, or Performance settings.

They had a tire pressure monitor, and CAGS(Computer-Aided Gear Selection)

The LT-5 was the main cause of the high weight though. It was originally meant as a boat engine, and was built by Mercury Marine. It weighs more than a cast-iron small block chevy.

It was a sweet car though. Wish I still had it.<!-- Signature -->

I could have one right now if I could get rid of my impala, but then, I would miss my impala too much. Maybe I should sell my blazer.....<!-- Signature -->

no, not that much, most of them you see for sale (low mileage, below 10k) are around $25-30k

  5. Re: Heavy!!!

Yeah - I hear that these cars (ZR-1's) are hard to come by. But not as rare as the 96' Grand Sport.<!-- Signature -->

  7. Re: Heavy!!!

I like how some of you say you owned one.. Well right now, theres like a 1 and a million chance of even seeing one.. They aren't that common at all.. and if you ever do come by one, take as many pictures as you can.. Im sure this will be one of the best Corvettes ever...and the LT-5 wasn't built my Mercury..25-30 thousand for a ZR-1 with under 20thousand miles is a joke... Be ready to spend atleast 40 thousand<!-- Signature -->

these cars are priced between 35 to 50 000 $. That is not astonishing according to the car rarity and performances.

  9. Re: Heavy!!!

Hey man, the LT-5 was actually built by Mercury Marine here in Oklahoma where I live . . . I'm thinking Mercury Marine is in Stillwater if I remember right. I think you are confusing who built the LT-5 and who designed it, because both GM and Lotus worked on designing it. Then once the car was to be produced, Mercury Marine built the engine for GM. You are right on about seeing one, I've never seen one. But I have seen about 5 or 6 Z06's, all of which have been very beautiful.

Ya i see ZR1's for the price of 1998 Z06's and they always sell within the day they are posted....and for finding a Grand Sport....NOT a hope in hell...ive only ever seen one in person and it was at a vette meet....

  11. Re: Heavy!!!

Mercury Marine, located in Stillwater,OK, did indeed build the engines for the ZR1, a fact that most people who know anything about the ZR1 acknowledge. We have spent a good deal of time researching the ZR1 and will soon be building a twin turbo setup for a customer on his personal ZR1.

  12. Re: Heavy!!!

The LT5 was also all aluminum, so I have a hard time believing it weighs more than a cast iron small block.

  13. Re: Heavy!!!

The C6 Is Coming, no such thing as a '98 ZO6, only regular 'Vettes. ZO6's Were Made From 2001 on.(excluding the ZO6 in the C2 'Vette.)

My teacher owns one of the original 1989 ZR-1 prototypes. They had eight prototype ZR-1's they were testing engines in. All of them were given to high officials of the ZR-1 project and my teacher got his hands on one that lucky bastard.

Hello all I am new to this site and have been reading some of the ZR1 stories here. I am the proud owner of a 1990 Bkl/blk ZR1 . The older zr1's where a little lightr then the newer ones with the 405 hp but if you look into it you will see the older ZR1s are a little faster on the 0-60 because it was about 200 pounds lighter. As for the rearity of this car I have still not seen another one yet. But I know they are out there somewhere.
