The 500E was brought into the U.S. I don't know how many were brought here if 1500 total were produced, maybe I'll look into that figure. My step-mom owns one and while she and my dad currently live in Maine, my dad and step-mom lived in Danville, CA and that's where I got to drive it. For being a family car, it will eat a lot of unsuspecting drivers who think it's only a 300 series Benz. We bought it from a lady who owns a pharmacy in a local drug store, the license plate read: "Rx4TQ" (Prescription for torque).
I'll see if my dad or brother, since he lives there now, can take some digital pictures. I'll see if I can post some better looking images than supercars.net has currently.

the E500 are very rare...I've never seen any, all I see are the 300 models!
believe it or not, I've seen SL55s , Ferraris, aston Martin's , even A CLK GTR, but I never saw an E500.. its not like the E is better than the other cars, but the E500 are really rare, and if you ever notice one it would be by chance!

For those of you who, obviously, don't know much...about the 500E, here is some info:

    - less than 2000 were imported to North America
    - they were hand modified and assembled by Porsche at the Rossel-Bau plant - the same assembly building as the Porsche 959
    - they were assembled side-by-side with the Audi RS2
    - bone stock and 50 state legal, they produced in excess of 320hp and 350lbs-ft of torque - 90% of which was available below 4000rpm
    - 0-60 time = 5.9 sec
    - 1/4 mi. time = 14.1 sec @100mph
    - weight 3800lbs
    - Price when new: $81,000+ USD
    - engine is a decked and tweaked version of the M119 5.0L V-8 from the 500SL
    - drivetrain is lifted from the R129 600SL
    - brakes are 300mm, vented front rotors with 4-piston calipers in the front and ventilated rotors and dual piston calipers in the rear
    - seats were by Recaro
    - externally, the only body parts in common are the roof, rear bonnet, front doors and rear windscreen
    - rear suspension was a hydro-pneumatic, self-leveling system which added stability in cornering
    - ride height is approx 1" lower and track is over 1.5" wider

if you come across one, don't expect it to be a cakewalk to pass. it still kicks the $#!* out of most cars on the road. trust me on this. i've got 2
