M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

Discussion in '2002 BMW M3 Cabriolet' started by Schaf100, Aug 9, 2002.

1. I'd be interested in hearing everyone's opinion on which car they'd buy; the M3 Cabrio or the CLK 55 Cabrio. While the performance is very close between both cars (the nod going just slightly to the BMW) the Mercedes has a V8 and costs another $20,000.

If I were spending the money, I'd go for the BMW because of the value/performance and the styling.

Personally, I whould choose the M3 too, not only for the value, but also because overall its the best: better handling, engine, chassis, looks better (though this last one is subjective, off course), and has a better sports image. MB is more classic, and luxurious, overall its made for a different kind of taste.

i've driven a CLK55, its fun, its quick and it smokes the wheels like no M3 could. I think there both great cars, however the M3's packing a lot more weight in cabriolet form that it is in the coupe.

Id take the CLK. Its V8 sounds awesome and also the fact that my old man decided to keep his after testing the M3 is a testimant that mercedes makes good cars. However. How many people regularly take there cars to tracks to race? Not many i'm betting.

9. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

i go with the M3 because it is made to race and go fast. The the clk 55 amg is nice but its more luxurious. I think the inside is tacky too

The fact that your "old man" took the CLK 55 over an M3 is a true testimant to the fact that mercedes makes "old man" cars! Your "old man" probably choose the CLK 55 because he is so old and he can no longer drive and change gears at the same time. A testimant though for BMW is that fact that there is a whole year waiting period for one of these.

Is that a fact? He actually decided to keep the CLK cause he liked the convertiable E46s better than the coupes also ordered an M3 in one of those as well. That and the fact that where i live theres actually a lot of traffic in the mornings and changing gears when you've got probably the best automatic gearbox in the world to do it for you is actually a plus after people have been driving manual for 30 years.

And there was an 18 month waiting list on the CLK when he got it.

and i just realised i didn't like your tone knob. "old man" is a term, it doesn't mean he's old. Hes early 50s. And the fact that you just disregarded the fact that he might actually enjoy driving cars is pretty stupid. If he wants to drive a manual he drives mine, thats coincidently a BMW. Which runs low 12s down the quarter on street tires so I'd say he's probably much more inept at driving high performance cars than you. He's outlooks diffrent, thats all.

12. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

M3 based on price and my thoughts now. it depends, i would want a manual now, but when im older i'de see myself in an automatic CLK55 AMG, too bad they're so expensive. M3 in my youth while I would drive like i have a sports car, CLK 55 AMG when I'm older and want a luxury cruiser with gobs of power.

without considering price the CLK55 AMG anyway day !!
the M3 is very nice and all, but considering that the AMG is AS fast but is MORE luxurious, and has more style and elegance the benz for me.
And sorry but you can't really compare them in the1st place. a supercharged V8 is just another level
the benz is more of a head turner then the BMW as well !!

The reason that you can't compare them is because its a cabriolet vs. a coupe, and no the shitty Mercedes V-8 isn't a level above, it some how only developes 15hp more. And no, I never turn my head at any CLK class.

15. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

i would never even consider an m3 compared to this. Old man's car?! I hate when people mock jsut to put up on what they like. I wouldn't take an m3 simply becaus eI do not like the design, many peopel say it looks distinct from the regular 3-series, but i see the a more than slight resemblance, where the clk looks exactly like its counterpart, It is well worth due to the beauty taht is a mercedes. Shitty engine?!!? have you ever heard it? no, because if you ahve you would never say such a thing, the engine is pure beauty, deep throaty tone, more reminisent of amuscle car than a luxury curiser. the M3's engine is pure thouroughbred harmony, but I woudl definitely choose the clk if not for the engine alone.

16. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

i think the mercedes clk55 amg is a great, has good looks and performance n that but but.....but....there is no chance than it is better than m3 coz m3 is to stylish to fast and sexy for the merc to even think about.

17. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

M3 ALL THE WAY TO GOOD LOOKIN AND POWERFUL FOR AMG. SORRY BUT THATS JUST THE WAY IT IS..

18. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

powerful for AMG?
the 3.2 AMG engine is more powerful than its M couterpart! 354 to 343 Hp and 450 to 350 Nm !
and the CLK55 is faster than the M3, looks better, is more reliable, and more confortable and luxurious.. The M3 is a gr8 car, considering it has an Inline 6, is cheaper than the CLK55 , I consider it the ultimate sports car: Price/performance/quality

But if i had to choose between the CLK55 and the M3, without having to pay , i would take the CLK55,,

ANyway i don't think the two cars are to be compared, the CLK is in A higher class i think.

19. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

guys, why compare a convertible to a hard top??! - ones a 5 ltr supercharged V8 vs a 3.2 ltr I6 - why dont u compare like the proper M3 to the AMG?! - im more of a BMW man than a Mercedes man, but the E55 AMG would whip the M3 convertible in this one..however, put it next to the M3 HARD TOP on a track, and the M3 would show it the door. It doesnt have as much power as the E55, but it has the handling and everything else!

20. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

the M3 is the better car for sure. 20k less, better performance, and it still gives a very smooth ride.

however i do prefer the styling of the Benz, both inside and out. the M3 is just one of the worlds best automobiles.

21. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

the SL55 produces 500bhp, and it uses the same supercharged engine as the CLK but produces more, the CLK was intended to produced those 350bhp, of course they could have made it more powerful.

the title of the thread is M3 cab vs CLK cab. there's no coupe in here. The shitty Benz V8 prduces more torque, more pwer and makes the CLK faster.
You never turn your head when u see a CLK that's your prob !!!
I turn my head when I see an M3, or a CLK... ur point ?

24. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

I'm assuming we're all talking about the CLK 55 AMG cabriolet vs the M3 convertible; the version of the Benz that was current at the time of the BMW's introduction. Hence, that means, it was using a NA 5.4L V8 producing 342 hp and 376 ft-lbs of torque. These cars compare very well. The companies that produce them understand that which each being in the other's class. That's good enough for me.

25. Re: M3 Cabriolet vs. Mercedes CLK 55 AMG

Both cars are really nice. The Benz is a lot more expensive, but it's a lot rarer, too. Personally, I'd take the M3 because I like the manual transmission and the facility to do small modifications to the M3 (like releasing the electronic speed limiter). Still, the Mercedes has an awesome sounding supercharged V8. Both cars are a tribute to the quality of German engineering.
