Monitors, regular or widescreen?

  1. This may sound stupid, but I cant decide between a regular 4:3 or a widescreen computer monitor.

I have a widescreen on my laptop but Ive never played games on it or anything, is there any drawbacks aside from the difficulty of finding wallpapers?

Anyone who picks a side, post why if you can.

  2. except for movies things make more sense in 4:3 (the web, etc.)

e.g. right now I'm on a widescreen monitor, w/ a web browser, with hundreds of wasted pixels on either side

  3. I dont recall that ever being a problem for me when Im on my laptop...

  4. it's not a 'problem' other than the computer is bigger than it needs to be.

Browsing the web in a full-screen wide-screen window is terrible however.

edit -- this isn't a problem on OSX where windows size themselves sensibly, but on Windows where they maxamize to the full screen it's super annoying

  5. finding wallpapers for widescreen is not even hard

  6. I only just recently got into the wide screen craze. there good

  7. Widescreen. It's better in every way, IMO.

  8. meh, a lot of websites fill the screen.

    SC.net doesnt, which sucks <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/sad.gif"></A>

  9. I find widescreen to be invaluable when I'm actually doing work and want to view more than one web page, program etc. at once. Plus stewacide said regular so iirc ergo idkbffjill the correct answer is widescreen.

  10. I lot of websites just break, with content stretched way across the screen. There's just no good reason to browse with a wide-screen window: it's a mess.

  11. unless websites change to widescreen format. That'd sexcellent

  12. lol wallpapers.

  13. "Widesceeen format" = stuff more ads down the side of the screen

  14. adblock bish

  15. where is breaks, ads, wasted space?

  16. I will never again buy a monitor with less than 1920 x 1024 after my laptop spoiled me with it

    widescreen all teh wai

  17. I think I'd rather have a 4:3, but large versions of them are getting harder and harder to find.

  18. everybody here except stewacide and mac777 say widescreen.
    its unanimous.

  19. widescreen is so much better, with like 90% of monitors sold these days widescreen soon enough websites will be catering for it.

  21. I think most early computers, particularily graphical computers, had screens taller-than-wide, which still makes more sense for most things you do on a computer (deal with texty documents mostly). I think the wider-than-tall convention came from using cheap TVs as monitors.

  22. you can rotate many desktop monitors and adjust the settings.
i did that on my 24 inch lcd in response to a veyronman thread...displaying an entire page of a thread is good...but hard to read.

  23. Why?

  24. Tall screen.

  25. Widescreen monitors are superior.

Almost everything i do benefits from a wide aspect ratio (video editing, music production, programming, gaming, movie watching).

I have 2 monitors on my desk, ones a 4:3, others a widescreen, widescreen is my main.
