More top speed

  1. Re: More top speed

Has anyone here actually driven one of these? It doesnt matter that the top speed is 'only' 124mph, going round a corner it'll whup anything short of a Caterham. Driving them on track days shows you can beat most supercars round a track with this thing.

I own one of these and let me tell you all, its completely thrilling. And this is the key point I have pushed it up to its top speed (around 130mph) and is scared the shit out of me. I used to own a Peugeot GTi which I would regularly drive at speeds of up to 140mph - it never felt that fast, nicely insultated in that cabin with a/c, ABS, power steering, and all that.

100mph in the Elise feels like 100mph should do - dangerous. The Elise communicates everything to the driver - changes of road surface - and I mean that I can detect which one of my wheels is touching a slick painted line - every undulation of the surface. this comes through the super communicative chassis, the steering and the non-servo'd brakes.

So, I simply step aside and let all the aneasthetised BMWs, Mercs and Japanese motors cruise past me at 100+ if you need top speed to have fun because you car is so detached from communicating with you, so be it. the most fun I have with my Elise is under 50mph, balancing the car on the throttle coming out of corners!

  5. Re: More top speed

I think this is only the base line model. I am pretty sure they offer the 135, and Sport 190 versions that offer 135 and 187 HP respectively. If you really want to go crazy, get the Motorsport Elise which is not only lighter and adds aero parts, but also has over 200HP.

  6. Re: More top speed

Bukem has go it right. That is why i want an elise. I want a car that talks to me and gives me feedback. My favorite car (not including race cars) that I have driven has been an old 88 civic without power steering. Owww, that was nice, you could just feel the wheels move in front of you and it just felt right. I have driven a camaro SS, a mustang cobra, BMW 330ci, Itengra gsr (a step below a type-r), and tons of other American and Japanese cars, but they cant beat that 88 civic. Those mustangs and camaros were fun because you just floor the throttle and go like f*ck, but in the turns or bumpy roads they suck. You have to drive one before you knock them, you will probably see why people like them, but they are not for me.

  7. Re: More top speed

I would love to have any of the Elise's. The motorsport is one of the best track cars around, these things are so nice in the corners. If Lotus does bring them to the states, I will consider buying one for sure. It's like a go cart for grown-ups

Hmmm, let me think the last time i could go 124, cant think of any. This car has pure handling. Ohh, and those that ***** about the US version getting a/c, just take it out. I have known people who have taken thea/c out during the fall and spring and putting it back in during july.

  9. Re: More top speed

    Whoa!!! Idiots!!!

    Listen Up.

First lemme say, this is a great car.

Next, with a car this light, having any more horses will make the wheels spin like crazy. Cars like this are meant for people like me, who drive on short, brake and go, winding, sharp turning, neck muscle fatiguing, reving up hills and wheels flying off the ground, Backroads. Do you go 125MPH on backroads? Hell no (unless you have a death wish). You go 80MPH , maybe 90, TOPS!!! You want 125MPH, drive on the autobahn. You want great handling, braking, and fun-to-drive performance, this is the car for you. You want a dragster? Go buy an old Chevelle.

Another thing, lighter cars, with small engines (4 cylinders) get great gas mileage, so this can be your daily driver car to work, yet still be your "take a hairpin turn or two" kind of car. Besides, this is a mid-engine (engine on top of the rear axle, not behind it). It's perfect for hairpin turns.

And seriously, has anyone here ever taken their car to its top speed on american roads? NO (way too many cops and traffic jams).

  10. Whats the real top speed of this cool car??? more top speed is the only thing that this car is lacking..... is awesome!!!!!

Hey hey 300zxmaniac finally we get agree man!!!

The ELISE JUST BURN THE ROAD!!!!

  11. Re: More top speed

i agree, they should add a supercharger and a 6th gear and make it alot faster.

  12. Re: More top speed

Even so, 124 mph is fairly respectable for a such a small car with a V4 engine.

  13. Re: More top speed

I really hope that isn't the actual top speed for such a sweet looking car.
That would just plain suck to have such a ride but only be able to go 124Mph. That's just plain sad. While I do have to agree with the 6th gear, the supercharger is kinda ehh. They should learn a few things from the Honda Corp. and get more like 195 Hp like the Integra R or switch to a 2.0L like the S2K and get 240HP out of such a sports car. Even still, I would love to have one of these babies, too bad I live in America.

  14. Re: More top speed

Just turbo it.. With a few engine upgrade you'e got 300BHP to the wheels.

  16. Re: More top speed

thsi car is ment to be a quick car not to beat records for top speed, believe me you wont even go any where near 124mph in any car unless you live by a no speed limit highway, and if you dont well then this car is fine.

Actually, there is a Japanese company (the name slips my mind now) that does modded Type-R engine swaps for this. Result is a 220bhp beast of a car.

u got it all wrong. it is a U.S. company that changes the engine to a Type-R engine to import it to the U.S. acceleration is slower and topspeed a little higher

  18. Re: More top speed

Actually, 124mph isn't bad for an inline four cylinder.

  19. Re: More top speed

124 mph is a perfectly fine top speed for this car. In fact, if you are anywhere near it in this car, you aren't having fun! This car is a nice light tossable little sports car made for carving up some twisties, not touring.

  20. Re: More top speed

Only Ferox D has touched on what this car is about. Cheap (relatively speaking) thrills is what this car is about, also precise handling and telepathic steering adds to the package. There is no reason to get excessive with this car, it does its job better than any other car in its class.

Oh and next time someone says that Lotus should take a lesson from Honda or any other japanese car maker, they should really re think the value of their opinion as every car enthusiest knows that Lotus and Europe have it all over any of those japanese cars.

  21. Re: More top speed

my suburban can do 124 mph.

  22. Re: More top speed

When the 2003 elises come to the united dtates there adding a 6th gear and 50 more horses which will get the topspeed up to 155. And ive had expierence with the car and u can put at least 2 turbos in it which could get the topspeed to about 180

  23. Re: More top speed

The Suburban may be able to do 124mph, but its acceleration, handling, braking and looks are not quite up to the elises standards.

  24. Re: More top speed

to me it doesnt really make sense to make a car have a top speed higher then what it can get to in the 1/4 mile

  25. Re: More top speed

Unless you live in Germany - and drive from 100 miles on the Autobahn to work every morning and back again. On mountainroads with lots of hairpins this is the type of car you need to have a great time. Unfortunately, I have only tried the Elise on a highway.
