Most and least friendly cities (your experience)

1. Among the cities and towns you have visited, which ones are the most friendly, and which ones are the least friendly? This is according to your own experience, has nothing to do with stereotypes or reputations.

For me, the 5 most friendly cities are:
#1: Los Angeles
#2: Dallas
#3: Shanghai
#4: Tucson
#5: New York City

According to my own experience, the least friendly city: Beijing

2. I find friendliness of cities to be about your mindset going in. If you latch on to what makes a cities people what they are, then they're all pretty friendly. Though in saying that, I guess it's because I'm pretty outdoorsy myself, but outside of NZ, Kathmandu and Vancouver both have vibes that I seem to gel with pretty well. I could probably move to either one (one could argue I've moved to Van this year...). Bangkok's definitely up there too for different reasons, as is Yangon.

3. I'm surprised that you found BJ to be less friendly than SH. Quite often in SH you get really shitty service if you don't speak Wu and born-and-raised locals tend to sneer at outsiders.

4. Friendly cities in no particular order:

Hamburg, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Prague, Berlin, Heidelberg and Göteborg for some reason.

List is limited to Yurops due to insufficient global travel experience.

NYC was kinda friendly but in a "spend your money and get out of the way"- way.

The friendliest treatment I ever got was in China but there were special circumstances. I witnessed Chinamen being real assholes to each other. Cultural differences make friendliness evaluation difficult as well as the size of the cities.

Île de France is the definition of the opposite of friendly. Sightseeing can be worth it but bring a flamethrower in case you encounter locals.

5. Friendliest:

Kuala Lumpur
Berlin
Ho Chi Minh City
Antwerp

Least friendly:

Hanoi
Rotterdam
Barcelona

6. Most friendly -
Krakow, Poland
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Harbin, China

Least friendly -
Dublin
Dubai
Munich
Sydney
Melbourne
Bangkok

7. I've always found Barcelona to be very friendly. Just got back from there again and it's still as friendly as ever

8. I found New York to be both the most friendly and also the least friendly.

Some people there were the nicest most accommodating people I ever met.

Some people there were the biggest arseholes I ever met.

9. Romans are assholes

10. Friendliest: Bangkok (and Thailand in general).
Most awkwardly friendly: Tokyo.
Most politically correct: Seattle.
Least friendly: Rome, Italy in general, Greece in general, Cyprus in general. Probably anything Mediterranean.

11. Most Friendly:
Prague
Zagreb
Brussels
Dallas
Austin
Swansea
Trier
Berlin
Geneva
Lausanne
Malmö
Stockholm

Least Friendly:
Varsaw
Cracow
London
Antwerpen
Dresden
New York (brooklyn and queens)
L.A.
Paris
Cork

12. Been there twice. I just felt invisible. Nobody stops to help when you need it and when you ask something they snub you. But that's my experience.

13. I don't think I've ever been to a place I'd consider unfriendly

14. Have you been to Paris?

15. French are only nice if you speak the language. Never had a problem with them.

16. usually fact but Paris has a special hatred reserved for only it and Toronto in my head

17. Halifax, Toronto, Riga are probably the friendliest.

Paris, Moscow the least friendly. London is also not particularly friendly, though it's still one of my favourite cities. Belfast also seemed unfriendly, but I was only there a few days.

Some places it just depends which corner you turn - New York being the primary example of such.

18. Friendliest. Puerto vallarta
Estorillos
Jaco
Havana

Least friendly. New York
Dallas

Edit: add Quebec city to least friendly

19. Friendliest. Puerto vallarta
Estorillos
Jaco
Havana

Least friendly. New York
Dallas

20. Friendliest: Seogwipo, Jeju Island, South Korea.

Least Friendly: Vancouver.

21. Most friendly: Lisbon
Least friendly: All of England

22. I wouldn't say nice. More like accommodating. If your French is bad they're straight up awful, at least in Paris. Also the city reeks of piss and cigarettes.

23. yeah paris is different then the rest of france though.

24. Sssooo NYC, Vancouver, Antwerp and Krakow are regarded as both friendly and unfriendly. Interesting.

25. London was friendly especially the bobbies for us tourists:

"hello we're trying to find X Y Z, could you help us please?"
"ah I could tell you were some tourists! haha! here you go blbalbal"

Paris is a pain / hate their attitude.
Toronto is my Barcelone, feel totally invisible / nobody cares.
