NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Discussion in '2002 Ford Focus SVT' started by The El Man, Dec 2, 2002.

1. American Focus buys really should import a Focus RS.

Not only does it look WAY BETTER than this (18inch one off OZ alloys, dirty great big front spoiler.

But it features a 2.0l Turbo with 212BHP.

0-60 in 6.4s

310NM of torque.

Plus it handles on rails.

Outclasses the Civic Type-R, Leon Cupra-R and Audi S3 in everyway possible. (Speed, handling, and in my opinon looks)

All for £19995.

The daddy of hot hatches.

I believe in america, recalls are a lot more frequent then in europe for crappy cars. Zetec motors always and still do have camshaft problems (like every DOHC ford motor... except the 4.6) and a turbo would just wear out that motor like crazy... so thats why i dont think they have a turbo's here.... maybe if they fix the problem then they could bring out something like that... my opinion...

Anyways... why doesnt ford use the damn 3.0 YAMAHA V6 in these cars????? the same motors in the 1988-1995 SHO's.... those are good motors and are god damn fast!!!!

NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Umm...the engines they use in euro focuses (foci?) are not very different from american ones, in that they are still zetec engines. So, unless there's some sort of weird american turbocharger disease, the turbo would most likely have the same effect on this continent as in europe.

4. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

that's because it IS in a higher class, doesn't even compare to cars in its class (Impreza WRX STI, EVO VII, etc.)

and it's 0-100 km/h is faster than that, hell the Type-R's time is faster than that, and it's in a lower class.

5. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

I think we can compare it to FWD, 2 litre turbocharged cars in its class. Plus the Civic Type R.
The reason is: the Focus RS's development is still not finished yet (although they sell it already). Every test report I have read about the Type R is bragging about it's fenomenous handling (it is always compared to a gokart). And especially the handling is the weakest point of the Focus RS: they say it is a dream to drive it on a race track or a road of good quality. But when the road surface is low-quality, the handling of the RS is rather a nightmare.

6. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

The one small problem with that reasoning is that the RS was intended to be in the same class as the Impreza WRX STI, EVO VII, etc.

7. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

0-60 mph is 0 - 100 km/h and it's about that time. it's a bit cheaper than the sti and the evo

8. Re:

No, 0-60mph of the RS is 5.8 sec.

It's in the class of WRX. In Europe, the RS costs £19995, while the Civic Type R is £15000, whihc is the same as the Focus ST170.

9. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

No $#!T, and it's 0-60 time is quicker than 6.5, it's 5.8, not nearly as fast as the STI or the EVO VII.

10. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

I agree almost completely except don't forget the S3 has got quattro. Think about it: quattro vs. FWD Focus RS. Just a thought.

I can't agree with you that the Focus looks better than the S3. Isn't a Clio V6 way cooler than an RS, too? but that's up to you.

11. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

The RS was ment to be compared against the WRX the Civic and integra Type R and the Audi S3. The RS wouldnt hold a candle against the STi and the EVO leave that to the awd cosworth with twice the power if not more. That focus will be a beast if they ever make it....

12. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

The RS is not comparable to the CIvic Type R, the Focus that competes with Civic is ST170.

13. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Yeah Tickford, so don't be comparing cars of different classes.

And the Civic Type-R completely out performs the ST 170 (ie: SVT)

14. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

I would take the Audi S3 over all of them. Its way better looking, and has quattro. But doesn't the Focus RS also have AWD?

15. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

it's available with AWD but difficult to obtain as anything other than FWD.

Anyway, the S3 is too slow for my taste. and we're comparing FWD's, for AWD I'd take a WRX STI or EVO III (or newer) any day.

16. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

i dont doubt the stats.
6.5 is what ford claims, meaning that the average driver can do that. if you are good you can go faster. they under rate their cars like many other car companies do so that you wont be dissapointed. ever wonder why 03 cobra is about as fast as a z06 and has 10 less hp and has 500lb more weight. cuz it realy has 430 hp at crank and 372 at wheels. i bet rs is the same maybe in optimum circumstances it has 230 hp or so.

if you made a car you would rather underrate it than overrate it. think of the guy in the wrx who gets suprised when he races and rs and find out hes not any faster.

17. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Read the post I was responding to, I was talking about the Neon SRT-4.

LOL, the Impreza's time is actually faster than Subaru claims. And consistently Stock Impreza's beat the Focus RS in drag races, and the RS doesn't even compare in Rally Racing.

18. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Recent tracktest at Lausitzring in Germany with the Focus RS showed it to be 1/100th of a second slower than the 260 bhp STi, this track takes ~1m50s for a normal car.
I'd say that is pretty damned close...
And it beat the hell out of both the new S3 and the Golf R32 which both cost slightly more.

19. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

No, the RS is in the class of the EVO and STI, the SVT is in the class of the Civic and Integra and Audi S3.

The RS can almost compare on road tracks, but is far outdone off-road and on rough paved surfaces (the type you see everywhere other than the track, particularly on highways and mountain roads) in the STI's and EVO's element, the only place the RS can almost compete is on a smooth, dry track.

And I dunno if the Cosworth will be able to hold anything against the STI that is on it's way to North America. Subaru has a history of packing a lot of performance into a small car, and generally the performance figures are higher than what would be expected for the power (hell, whoever heard of a 1,590kg car with 260hp and 245lbft doing the 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds?), while Ford? they have a history of making fast drag cars, and durable trucks using large displacement engines. So, here we have a car from a company known for little related to this matter (Cosworth) with 300hp, 276lbft(? - if my memory serves me correctly) and AWD, vs. a car from a company notorious for producing cars that are faster and handle better than they should (STI) with 300hp, 300lbft, a superior AWD system (read the specs on the AWD drivetrain they're going to use before commenting to that last part), and WRC spec based design. I think the STI would have the upper hand in this one.

20. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Why the hell are you comparing 2 Foci?

Good question, perhaps he's under the impression that the SVT was designed and made here in America, while the RS was designed and made in Europe?

I thought the comparo between a higher end Focus and a lower end Focus was kinda stupid as well.

22. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Password Please:
The RS is NOT in the same class as the STi, nor the Evo VII. The RS is in the same class as the WRX.
The RS costs £20k, the STi is £27k, and the Evo VII is around £29k, although there will be a cheaper, lower spec Evo VIII for around £20k.
The WRX costs £20K.

0-100 mph times (usually considered more of a true performance measure than 0-60 as it is less affected by gear ratios and 2wd/4wd differences)

Ford Focus RS : 14.9 secs
Subaru Imprezza WRX : 15.7 secs

23. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Your logic is solid except for one small detail - price does not determine what class a car is in (unless you're looking at what income bracket the car is targeted for, in other words price class), the RS was designed to compete with the STI and EVO, it was designed to be in the same performance class, and it failed.

24. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

Why do you believe it was aimed at the same class STi and Evo? I am not saying it wasnt, but I dont really see much to prove the fact. I'm not sure what you mean by saying they failed. Although i dont think they have a clear cut rival, they've pretty much beaten their closest rival (WRX) and people like you comparing them to the Evo and STi, even if they are not as good, proves they did something right. They are having no trouble selling the RS Focus, so far it has been a success for Ford.

25. Re: NOTHIN ON THE FOCUS RS!

actually one more time it didnt fail it actually succeded...0-60 was slower yes...why? no awd to aid it..

but 0-100 thats a whole different story...the focus runs away like a mad dog from the awd more powerfull sti...

and on top of that the FOCUS RS has ALREADY beat the STI in several mags on tarmac by a few seconds and then some....

so i would take it that the cheaper rs is made in a price bracket of the wrx but can well handle the sti, some pennys more....kinda like how a viper handles 150k ferraris...
