Opinion poll: American car or not?

Discussion in '2001 BMW M Coupe' started by The Garage King, Aug 9, 2002.

1. This car, not including the engine and transmission is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina which makes it American-made. It's parts content is 40% USA and 45% Germany. I say it's an American car, how about you and why?

2. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

I'll say it's German, but only by a hair. Why?

1) It's based on the E36 platform (short of the rear suspension, of course), which originates from Germany.
2) The design team that gave birth to it is located in Germany. Lead by Dr. Burkhard Goeschel, I believe.
3) The standards for build quality, in terms of tolerances, finish, etc., are no doubt dictated by BMW's offices in Germany.
4) As you stated, the heart of the beast, the S54, is handbuilt in Germany.

But the fact that its content is so high in US parts, combined with its assembly by citizens of the US, does make for a strong case that it's American. And, since final execution is every bit as important as initial design and engineering, this should further prove that American workers can turn out exemplary products. But overall, I'd say there's slightly more German in it than American.

what the last guy said, along with:
Even though it was made in america doesnt take away the fact that it was concieved (first created) in Germany, was designed by germans, and weres the german name plates.

6. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

Many american cars are built in canada and mexico. And Japanese cars are built in america.

chevy builds sedans in canada. ford and chrysler build in mexico. toyota trucks built in san francisco bay area. Nissan in tennessee(i think) BMW N. carolina(?)

I think a cars place of conception and corporate nationality identifies its own nationality

7. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

i don't think that if a car is made in the U.S. makes it an American car. cause the money goes over-seas

8. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

I saw its a German car no matter where it is made. You can make the analogy that, if an American Flag is made in Mexico with "parts" from Mexico, it's still an American Flag.

9. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

It is not an american car. Period

Just because one part of one of the earlier corvettes was produced in Denmark, I definately wouldn't call it Danish.

10. Re: Opinion poll: American car or not?

if its 40% american and 45% wheres the other 15%

this car was designed in bmw munich, and the fact that 20 american dude have fixed the parts imported and designed in europe doesn't make it a us car! don't dream guy's, your governement as usual must have forced bmw to employ some guys in your country in order to have the right to sell in the us...
