Performance isn't something to be proud of

Discussion in '1981 DeLorean DMC-12' started by Homsar, Aug 13, 2003.

  1. The styling of the DeLorean is great. The only thing I would change is tune up the performance and build it better. My best friend owns a DeLorean in near mint condition and says that it's always breaking down. So anyway, the DeLorean needs to have better performance and better quality. Other than that, awesome car!!!

I'll agree, the car isn't going to win any auto cross meets, set any 1/4 mile records, break any land speed records, but it's not bad by any means. Ever drive a 3 cyl. geo???
Take a look at the origins of the PRV6. Most examples of the engine you'll find in earlier everyday Euro cars. It's still rather shocking to me that the father of many muscle cars will build with that power plant.

But, when you aren't trying to build a high perfomance car; instead building a vehicle designed for comfortable driving, multiple safety features, AND be reliable, on top of stylish, in a decade littered with automotive frankensteins, it was indeed a good choice.

Most of the V8 powerplants that were out in the early 80's were sorely underpowered, drank way too much gas, and weren't very reliable themselves... (see the 1982 vette and transam). Yes they had V8's in them, but by todays hp standards, they're easily outrun by your average Nissan Altima. Hell, with the crappy V8's that were coming out at the time, i'd have installed a european motor too.

By using a PRV6, you have a tried and true power plant, that is more reliable than powerful. If you are creative enough, and confident enough to do some experamenting, you may be able to get a decent HP gain out of it (DMC Houston is up to 197hp with the upgraded engine).

As far as your friends, well, what condition did he buy his car in? Has he done a complete maintenance overhaul? How long was the car sitting? What has he replaced, repaired? What problems has he been experiencing?
You can take any 20 year old car and put it back on the road with no problem, but if you didnt prepare the car to run properly, you will run into problems. I can't tell you how many hrs a person SHOULD spend on a D they just bought just to insure that they have a drivable car that will not give them that much trouble.

If the PRV6 isnt good enough for ya, you can also try doing a volvo engine swap. Transplant a turbo powerplant from an 85 760 Turbo Volvo... it's just a suggestion.

Yeah, The Cheat was protected by Strong Mad. Strong Bad wants to kick the Cheat.

  4. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

Also, my friend bought his by himself back in the early '80s, but only put 120 miles on it. So it's been sitting in his garage for 20 years. Just now he's starting to drive it but not before taking it to a local garage. When he did, the mechanic said that there was nothing to fix, and he inspected the car for 2 hours, too. So maybe it's just his DeLorean, or almost all DeLoreans are poorly built.

A local garage will know nothing about a Delorean. Never take it to a place like that unless someone has experience with a D. I know for sure it does need updates. Accumulator, would be best to get a 105 amp alternator, he will need to do a full electrical service. Get Fanzilla installed. The whole fuel system will need flushing. You will need to inspect the fuel pump and all relays.

  6. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

Yeah, the mechanic there has been working there for about 30 years and has worked on D's before.

  7. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

where do you live? i know my bros gf's dad has worked on them before, but hes an ass and says its a shitty car. i think its just his service.

  8. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

i totally agree. if i drove this car around the block, i can bet my bottom $ that it will sure turn heads and attract ppl. leave it parked in a lot, ppl for sure will gather around it.

gee... what other car is rare and can do such a thing? oh yeah, an expensive Ferrari, which btw i see a lot of and i have never for once seen a DeLorean. if both cars were parked infront of me, i would so be all over the DeLorean.

  9. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

I've seen a few... they're definetly not common though. Would you even go up to the DeLorean though if it was parked next to a Vanquish or the Enzo? I've only seen like... 3 Astons on the street in my entire life.

  10. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

If it is a custom-built, BTTF version of the DeLorean. =D

  11. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

What about the BTTF version DMC or one of the James Bond Astons?

  12. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

DMC all the way. EVERY car in the world(except maybe bricklin, which still has color options) has paint. not very different. but a delorean stands out so unbelievably much id be right there. and hopefully be the owner. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  13. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

Well if you choose to look at the Delorean please try not to touch it owners dont like it to much.

  14. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

i noticed. just keeping my model clean is a pain. but if i were to sit init i can close the door without touching the ss. i ll wear rubber gloves when i get mine. buy them at the store so if someone wants to check it out they can borrow gloves.

  15. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

I dont think many people would like that.

  16. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

What do you clean them with... TARNEX?

  17. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

    then i ll tell them no, they can just look<A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  18. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

I use soap and water to get off the dirt. Then I dry it off. And finish with some foam window cleaner. For the front, rear, and Louver I use armor all protecting wipes. And when entering shows I clean the stainless with a brille cloth.

  19. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

Hey man I agere with you this car could use more power but remember it use a Renault V-6 he would have been better of with Alfa Romao supplying the engine and you can't make a DeLorean more reliable since the company whent bankrupt in the 80's and John DeLorean was framed for drug dealling buy GM, ford, and Chyrsler.

  20. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

I agree that he was framed not pointing at GM Ford or Chrysler but the US in general. As for the PRV6 I think it’s a good engine it’s reliable and can produce some good power if it is modified correctly. As for engine choices if America had a good engine at the time he should have used it, but at that time there were not many good choices. I think Delorean should have sold Delorean in Europe first with the Rover V8. Then after a few years begin selling in America.

  21. Re: Performance isn't something to be proud of

    how big is the V8.

yeah, the car companies were affraid of competition. just like Tucker Torpedo. it would "hurt sales" if they remained.
