Porsche 911 with a S/C LS1 in the rear

  1. I like that a lot. I can see where AMGrulz is coming from saying that putting a LS1 into something isn't unique but the fact is that the LS1 is one of the best engines in the world right now (all things considered) and putting in a heavier engine just for the sake of being different would throw off the weight distribution even more and make the car more difficult to drive. This car still has to be driven, probably on a daily basis.     I'd like to see a LS1 in a Carrera 4.

  3. did not use an LS-6 because he got this engine for 600 bucks on ebay. I'm sure if he had found an LS-6 on there for this much he would have gotten it. More pics on the way.
  4. Okay, I've seen other Porsches with LS1s in the back, so it's not totally unique. Not ordinary, but not totally unique either. Now crawl back into the hole in the ground you came out of.

  9. Yeah, this would be my only concern with this swap. Oh, and cooling it...

    A 911's engine barely comes up over the top of the tires, at least all but the lighter fan and some intake plumbing. With the height of the LS1, would this seriously throw off the stability of this car? Seems like it would be exceptionally hard to control, especially with that torque...
  10. I saw it on TV once about 5-7 years ago, please forgive me for not remembering the channel and not taping it, I didn't foresee any need to and my memory isn't photographic.
  11. I don't have a picture, and even if I did the best I could do is hold it up to the monitor since i don't have a scanner. If you're so damn sure I'm wrong, then prove it.
  12. How can prove that there isnt another 911 with an LS1, by posting a blank picture? I can't prove it per-se, but I looked all over the internet and could not find anything about another 911 with an LS1 in it. All I did see was pipe dreams and people talking about performing the conversion.
  13. I have seen several conversions. They aren't all that entirely rare. Chevy V8's at least, not specifically the LS1. There's a company called Porschev where that's all they do. I can't find a site for them, but you can find plenty of hits on google.

  15. That's just it. There are plenty of 350's stuffed into 911's, but there aren't all that many LS1's. This one is claimed to be the first *supercharged* LS1, so that probably means there are other LS1's residing in 911's, but you don't hear about them so it seems to be a pretty unique swap to me.

    To address two other concerns/questions:
    1. Center of gravity. The center of gravity would move up some, but how much I don't know for sure. The LS1 has an aluminum block and head, so the steel crank would tend to move the center of gravity down relative to an iron head/block engine. Most of the heavy bits of the air-cooled flat-6 are down low (lower than the LS1), but the cooling fan/alternator and all that shrouding isn't exactly weightless. The alternators themselves (the alternator hides behind the cooling fan and runs on the same shaft) weigh a good 20-25 lb, and that's up pretty high above the crank. In any case, I don't think the average driver would notice the difference in dynamics between the two engines simply because *most* drivers never drive a car at its limits... and if they do happen to reach the car's limits, they usually crash.

    2. Size. Well, the LS1 is narrower and appears to be no taller or longer. Again, the air-cooled flat-6 has all that shrouding and the cooling fan which adds a lot of height to the engine. And the cooling fan is located all the way at the front of the engine (all the way in the back of the car). So it's pretty easy to see how an LS1 would be a relatively easy fit, especially when you consider that the older, less compact 350's have been swapped into the 911 for a couple decades now.
  16. There's quite a difference in weight distribution there. And it's not like he put it in a 996 or something where that weight is really well controlled. It looks like it's in a 964, which had a pretty lively (I prefer the term "fun") rear-end. Especially with a S/C up there, that's going to make a pretty serious difference!
    Fan, some intake, and an alternator are quite a lot lighter than Heads, Pistons, Supercharger, etc...

    Also, I'd like to know what he is doing to cool that sucker. Not a whole lot of room up front for a proper cooling system unless your business card says "Porsche Engineer" and you REALLY know what you are doing.

    Not bashing it, just voicing my concerns.

  18. I'm a fan of the flat six but I have to admit, the Chevy V8 does have some nice points about it.
  19. I imagine you'd simply run a radiator in the front (trunk) like the V8 914's do. You would have to cut some louvers in the hood or holes somewhere for the hot air from the radiator to escape.
