Almost. BMW was at risk of being bought out by Mercedes, in the old days. And Datsun reportedly bought the 1600 (precursor to the 2002, with 1600cc engine but otherwise identical to the 2002), flew it back to Japan, and dissected it. They did a pretty decent job of copying this car, I must admit.

For anyone else who thinks this car is shabby, C&D wrote in its '68 road test:
"If the 1600 was the best $2500 sedan C/D ever tested, the 2002 is most certainly the best $2850 sedan in the whole cotton-picking world." (They don't often praise modern cars like this.)
"To my way of thinking, the 2002 is one of modern civilization's all-time best ways to get somewhere sitting down...The minute it starts moving, you know that Fangio and Moss and Tony Brooks and all those other big racing studs retired only because they feared that someday you'd have one of these, and when that day came, you'd be indomitable. They were right. You are indomitable.
First stoplight. I blow off aging Plymouth sedan and 6-cylinder Mustang. Not worthy of my steel. Too easy. Next time. Big old 6-banger Healey and '65 GTO. GTO can't believe I'm serious, lets me get away before he opens all the holes and comes smoking past with paint and outrage all over his stricken countenance. Austin-Healey a different matter. Tries for all he's worth, but British engineering know-how and quality craftsmanship not up to the job. I don't even shift fast from third to fourth, just to let him fell my utter contempt.
Nobody believes it, until I suck their headlights out. But nobody doubts it, once that nearly-silent, unobtrusive little car has disappeared down the road and around the next bend, still accelerating without a sign of the brake lights...
What you like to look for are Triumphs and Porsches and such. Them you can slaughter, no matter how hard they try. And they always try. They really believe all that jazz about their highly-tuned, super-sophisticated sports machines, and the first couple of drubbings at the hands of the 2002 make them think they're off on a bad trip or something. But then, they learn the awful truth, and they begin to hang back at traffic signals, pretending that they weren't really racing and all. Ha! Grovel, Morgan. Slink home with your tail between your legs, MG-B. Hide in the garage when you see a BMW coming. If you have to race with something, pick a sick kid on an old bicycle.
But I don't want you to get the notion that this is nothing more than a pocket street racer. The BMW 2002 may be the first car in history to successfully bridge the gap between the diametrically-opposed automotive requirements of the wildly romantic car nut, on one hand, and the hyperpragmatic people at Consumer Reports, on the other."

3. boring

i think it is boring loking and it is very slow

What do you think

4. Slow? not for a 30 year old car, and with mods that thing can move. All it takes is about 200hp and that thing will hit the 5 sec range on the 0-60

Boring? NOT AT ALL. have you ever seen one in real life? i see my own every day and its anything but boring. its a classic piece of work

It synthesized several elements that were previously unavailable together: Handling, Speed, and Reliability. The only production cars that handled well (except for true exotics, i.e. porsche and ferarri) were triumphs and alfa romeos. Both of these cars (the tr3 and the spyder) were incredibly slow straight ahead, and very unreliable. In order to get straight line speed, you would have had to have bought a big american car...like a roadrunner superbird, which would have handled like shit. This car had pretty good straightaway speed, and handling that beat a triumph or an alfa...and was practical and reliable to boot. In addition, the first mass-manufactured turbocharged car was a 2002...just another piece of this car's history.

10. this is one of the best beamers there are! this car is a beauty. if i had a chance, i'd drive this car over any, except maybe a 550 barchetta...heh.

11. It was also good enough to win the Rally of Austria in 1973.

12. Boring, have you ever driven one? With abour $2500 worth of mods the Tii is capable of at least 200hp and 10,000 rpm. Boring, I think not. Not to mention flawles hadling with suspention. And those who converted this car to a 5 speed, 80 miles per hour at 2300rpm. Who ever posted the first reply, you need to learn more about cars.

19. great car.. yet i do think the stats are a lil low for this car.. i mean the mercedez 50s cars outperform this car by quite a bit.. a great car though

20. Which Merc's from the '50s? I'm not aware of any 4-seat Benzes in those days that could take this little guy in the corners...

21. I bought a '76 last summer. The first weekend i had it i took it to the local scca race that weekend in the philadelphia chapter. I am 19 and really wasn't expecting too much since it was bone stock except for the 32/36 weber on. I ran my five laps and found out that i was 3 out of 6 in my class. I was wondering if whoever said this was a boring and slow car ever drove in one. If so then so be it but if not then don't talk with out driving one.

Some people lack knowledge about cars. The 2002 had a unique design and it was pretty quick for its time. The 2002 is a BMW icon, as it started the legendary status of BMW. So go into your pinto forum and brag about your piece of shit death trap of a ride.

23. whatever, i just dontlike these. the styling is pretty damn dumpy, and itsays something about a car when you have to putmods on it to make it move (if indeed thats what you want to do). if it were luxurious, thatd be one thing, but this is anything but, imo.

24. Definately NOT boring. I love the 2002, if you have any appreciation for real cars (not P-O-S rice) then you know that this car was revolutionary for its time and is still today an icon in my opinion.

Although it may be considered slow compared to todays standards, it definately is fun as hell to drive. I almost prefer drivng my friends 2002 to my 99 Audi. Its just so classic.

I love its size, i love the handling and the visibility is insane. Its like being just surrounded by glass, it makes my car look like a blindfold.

Anyway, anyone who thinks the 2002 isn't a great car doesn't deserve to drive.

25. Yo dont call this car boring or slow. It really isnt slow. I mean comon, its an old car. But it is a speedy car. And BMW 2002 is rite, if it werent for this car, BMW might not have existed today
