  1. Other Rivals?

    Does mercedes have a car that can rival this? i dont know much about mercedes so fill me in: is this really the best, or does audi or mercedes or vw or volvo have something better?<!-- Signature -->
  2. I would say go do your own research, and then you'll find that nothing rivals the M5<IMG SRC=""> (in my opinion anyway).

    Closest comparitive Mercedes-Benz would be the E55 AMG. Big 5.5litre V8 with 354bhp. More luxury orientated than the M5 though.

    Jaguar S-Type R, supercharged 4.2litre V8, 400bhp but according to Jaguar they have no intention of attempting to rival the M5, but instead the luxury route ie E55. There official words not mine.

    Holden GTS-R, 5.7litre V8, 401bhp fairly loud and racous<IMG SRC=""> Lacking in refinement compared to any of the above, but good in a scary kind of way<IMG SRC="">

    Audi RS6, sounds great on paper, twin-turbo 4.2litre V8, 450bhp, 0-60 same as the M5, 0-100 0.6secs quicker etc. Yet apparently the chassis is about as much fun as a slap with a haddock.

    People might want to talk about cars outside of the Sports Saloon catergory but thats comparing apples and oranges. So there you go, conclusive proof that the M5 has no rivals. Not just my subjective opinion either, based on stats and the views of numerous autmotive journals.<!-- Signature -->
  3. Just be glad the Lotus Carlton(Omega) isn't produced anymore!!!!<IMG SRC=""><!-- Signature -->

    Yes mate, Phat car, Did you watch 5th Gear On Monday? Tiff in the S-Type R and M5?? The M5 whooped it, though it was stated that the Jag wasn't really aimed at the King( <IMG SRC=""> ) , But Tiff did say something about how many other Big Four door saloons have 400Bhp??? <!-- Signature -->
  5. Lotus Carlton, I left it out as I was talking about contempary cars, and not because in certain situations it would have kicked the M5<IMG SRC="">

    I watched 5th Gear. Something I forgot to add about the S-Type R is that supercharger whine which would seriously start to annoy me after about 5 minutes.<!-- Signature -->

    Nope sorry, wrong answer. Feel free to try again though. And heres why, using figures from Autocar magazine and not ones on here which are often massively inaccurate.

    Boxster S (Autocat Stats)

    0-60 = 6.0sec
    0-100 = 14.2
    30-70 = 5.5
    30-50 = 5.1
    50-70 = 10.6

    PWR = 195bhp/tonne

    BMW M5 (Autocar)

    0-60 = 4.6
    0-100 = 10.6
    30-70 = 3.8
    30-50 = 4.2
    50-70 = 6.8

    PWR = 228bhp/tonne<!-- Signature -->
  9. what about Corsa 5.7ltr supercharged V8? Australian manafacturer, simular as the HSV GTS you get in the UK (cause you called it a GTS-R). But makes 424kw (573hp) and 800nm of torque in the 1700kg body shell, fastest production sedan in the world. But that kinda vechile is just aimed at scaring people! But performance wise, its quicker than everything else. Could even possibly still be quicker than the next gen Mercs and BMWs but it doesn't matter, you'll never see one in europe!

    Also isn't there some supercharged HSV there as well? that makes 500 odd horsepower??

  11. The 2004 Lincoln LS-R(or whatever they will call it). Its got the same engine as the FR500 Racing mustang(415bhp about 375lb ft. of tq.) in a 302 american V8. Comes with a six speed tremec transmission, heavily modified suspension, 18inch wide z-rated tires. I don't know much about it(I got this from a friend who works at the PAG-fords group of their luxury cars) and weight it said to be around 3700? I don't know if these numbers are true....but with 300 less pounds of weight, 20more horses, and about 10 more lb. ft. of torque with an equal 6 speed you would hope if ford knew what the #$%# they were doing(don't know that they do) that this car would be able to out accelerate an M5. They supposedly hope to price this car a hair under 60,000......keep in mind this is all just speculation from one source....but I hope they do build american sedan that could beat an M5 for 10grand less?
  12. Can I say Lotus Carlton again?<IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><IMG SRC=""><!-- Signature -->
  13. Ps:where did u get those Autocar tests results for the M5......the test I've got they got 0-60mph in 5.3secs and 0-100mph in 12.7secs?

    Boxster S stats right though<IMG SRC=""><!-- Signature -->
  14. Autocar first tested the M5 on 21st January 1999. Thats when it recorded 0-60 in 5.3 and 0-100 in 12.7. Auto Motor und Sport had tested the same car and destroyed the clutch on it before Autocar drove it.

    They figured it again on 9th June 1999, when it hit 0-60 in 4.6 and 0-100 in 10.6.

    I have no idea why they still refer to the slower figures in the stats section.<!-- Signature -->
  15. Have u got the test that you could scan.........that's a fast time!<!-- Signature -->
  16. Roadkil68, these stats are out of Autocar (UK magazine), in the 1999 Roadtest Yearbook (22/29 December '99).

    Brit Cars, I'll try and get my scanner configured for my new PC and attempt to scan the page. If not I'll e-mail Autocar and get them to confirm it<IMG SRC=""><!-- Signature -->
  17. Cheers<!-- Signature -->
  18. Don't worry mate.
    Cerbman just posted Auto Express' road test of the M5 along with other 0-60mph in 4.6secs and 0-100mph in 11.2secs.

    Here's the article for those want that's fast!

    Ps:Look at the Tuscan S'<IMG SRC=""><!-- Signature -->
  19. Great, so it wasnt just a one off then<IMG SRC="">

    As for the Tuscan S, hell its fast. But Im just waiting for the Tuscan R, which hopefully will have the six-speed sequential gearbox.<!-- Signature -->
  20. demolished by the 91 twin turbo.
  21. The new E55 AMG will have 476Hp and it will be more than a rival to this would be even better...
    o-100 in 4.7 km/h with all the luxury stuff...
    there's also the S 55 with 500 hp, the big luxury sedan , 0-100 km/h in 4.8 sec....
    what do you think?
  22. Yep, that should be a good contest.
    Who's going to have a bet that the M5 will be the better driver's car though? proof, I'm just guessing!
  23. I rekon the only car that even a little bit in this cars class is the Mercedes Benz E55 AMG even then the M5 would destroy it because its a BMW!! and because its far superior
  24. that is the s600
