damn it BrownDoggie, i thought u were still at university, how the hell can u afford 2 buy a brand new Lightning?....arent they like $32000????
Why is Chevy stealing German engine designs Audi was the only company goofy enough to release an inline-5. If this thing is anywhere near the beautiful 50's icon, there's no way an inline-5 is gonna cut it.
i'd hardly call the inline-5 a 'german engine design'...and ooooooh im offended by the 'goofy audi' comment, sounds like somebody needs to be introduced to a little car called an Audi Quattro, totally revolutionary rally car from 1981, upwards of 700hp from just 2.1-litres at Pikes Peak and IMSA GTO, all from a trusty inline-5 but yes, god only knows y anybody would want to make a 3500cc inline-5, whats the point, make it a V8, takes up less space, and has smaller combustion chambers for more efficient burning of fuel
My dad had an '85 Mercedes 300TD, an inline 5 turbodiesel engine. Sadly, it was only 120hp. So no, Audi was not the only company to release an inline 5.

Honda/Acura's Vigor of the early to mid 1990s used an Inline-5. Volvo's used Inline-5s for years even in racing. Spyder757
ay fo' all of y'all chevy didnt steal from any other company, especially the audii inline 5? please this is an inline 6
americans steal ideas from everybody else all the time whats the suprise... i wouldn't be suprised too if that is picture of new one - however i somehow doubt it!<!-- Signature -->
Do your ears ever get cold? Does this mean that after the internal compustion engine was invented, no one else could use it? Let me guess, you drive an Acura, Infinity or Lexus.
oh almost forgot acura had an inline 5 in the old vigor and tl 2.3. so no audi is not the only company with an in line 5.
what's wrong with Inline engine? especially when Vortec and GM does it. What is most likely gonna happen is that they are mounting it longitudinally. Therefore it's gonna be a RWD car. Vortec has proven that the 4.2L I6 is an awesome engine..quiet, smoothe..awesome power =) so why not try it for a 3.5L? you see...all the competition is resulting in going for hightech and space efficientcy with V8s and stuff..and making people pay for like electronic engine stabilization system, GM is not going to that...Das why they will aways be cheaper than the competition in price..and they can spend more on interiors which everyone has been bitchin' bout =P DA PUN<!-- Signature -->
yah they should use there vortec pickup engine if they want it to be like the old one ( heavy, poor handling, and not enough power/weight.) But wait, that whould give it low end torque (more then the original had). The only thing nice to say is the styling is very good. If you like fifties american.
Hey, i know someone with a volvo v70 2.4t, and it only makes 197hp, but that thing is fast for only 5 cylinders.
WOW!! I get the point. I think I know what you guys are trying to say here... Audi wasn't the only company to produce an inline-5. Is that it? And knowitall, I drive a '66 Pro Street Mustang, '79 Capri w/ 351 Cleveland, and an '85 Chevette that's getting a 307 Chevy soon. Oh - and a '02 Lightning in February. That's all good, but you can never change the fact that the I-5 is a very unstable engine design, even with "modern technology" (Vortec is like VTEC, it's just a way to advance the timing at higher RPMS).

inline 5's are ok my 86 AUDI 5000 TURBO QUATTRO has turbo I-5,full time four wheel drive,re-worked turbo & suspension 265 hp. and tons of torque,14 psi boost. 249,000 miles, uses no oil, no leaks, no rust and motor has never been apart,oh yea... gets 34 mpg. on hwy.P.S. not a chevy fan due to my employer being FORD MOTOR CO.

'38 Ford 313hp twincharged Levin GT-Z 235hp honda civic sedan (girlfriends) 520hp Skyline GTS25t a kind of half-dead skyline-engined silvia, (offers?) DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT okay, civics are #$%#ing gay. "an impressive 1.6L engine"...hmm
and what do u mean by 'unstable'...with reference to problems encountered with cars with such engines?
Allright, I am a 20-year-old student at WSU and a U.S. Marine in the Reserves. Just so there is no confusion, let me explain: I have been street racing since I was 15 years old. I got ahold of my baby 2 years ago (my '66) and have gone through 2 motors, but it's takin' me 2 years to put $15,000 into it. My Capri I got a year ago for $1250 down from $2000 (I was very proud of myself). It's got a Cleveland w/ 71,000 miles, and it wasn't running right, but I fixed it up and now it's pretty quick (low 14's). My Chevette was $250 - piece of shit. I work for Vector Marketing Corporation while at school and do pretty well. I would like to get a loan for an '02 True Metallic Blue Lightning, $32,000. Military pays for school, plus a high SAT score helped w/ some scholarship money. Just wanted to make sure there was NO confusion and I wasn't trying to BS anybody. I can't stand any of this "I've got a 650 HP Firebird that runs 7's, blah, blah." If anyone wants to know any of the $5,000 in parts to my 392 CID Cleveland stroker, I'd be glad to state all of them. It's dynoed at 438.6 HP and 486.4 ft/lbs, and I'm very proud of it; it took me 3 months of dedicated work. My goal was a 400+ HP motor that would last 100,000 miles, so far doin' good at 5500. She ran a best of 12.36 at Seattle International, if I had a scanner, I'd scan the slip. You think I'm lucky? Wish you could see Rich's driveway...
My friend Tim Denny in high school had an '85 Audi 5000s w/ an inline 5. It was a great car. The design itself is impractical - if I could explain the whole theory, I would, ch1, for you would be one of few on these boards who would understand me. It all comes down to the rotary assembly. A 60 degree V-12 is the most balanced engine design in the world. 12 goes into 360 better than anything else, is how it was explained to me. As each piston is pulled back in a twelve, the countering piston almost completely cancels out those dangerous crankshaft vibrations (the reason you have a harmonic dampener in your car). A 5 just doesn't have the balance to counteract those vibrations. Try this; get in your car, turn your radio to the lowest AM setting you can (510 if you can get there). At that frequency, you should here a buzzing. Rev your motor. The buzzing should respond. Those are vibrations from your crankshaft; the more balanced your motor is, the less you'll here that. Other than that, this car needs a 283 for old time's sake.
oh well....im an 18yr old and am very lucky if my dad lets me drive his 115hp Audi, otherwise its my moms 75hp Citroen (dumbass little front drive french car)...oh to have a 440hp car in my drive, ive got $3500 in my bank, say, and at best that buys u a 5yr old front-driver with a double figure power output, i dont think i'd b allowed anywhere near a drag strip (sorry, THE drag strip, britain only has like 1 i think!!!) coz our cars r so god damn slow
