New York Preview: Subaru WRX goes widebody for 2011

by Damon Lavrinc (RSS feed) on Mar 22nd 2010 at 10:01PM

Since the introduction of the third-generation Impreza, Subaru has been making incremental improvements to the rally-bred WRX, first with a significant bump in output for the 2009 MY and now the adoption of the STI's widebody design for 2011. And not only does the five-door model benefit from its pumped-up sibling's sheetmetal, but the sedan gets a much-needed testosterone injection to boot.

With a 1.5 inch-wider track front and rear, the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX's stance is decidedly more aggressive, and with firmer rear subframe bushings pulled from the STI and wider 17x8-inch wheels wrapped in 235/45R17 rubber, the 2011 'Rex is assuredly stickier than its predecessor.

The cosmetic mods don't end with the widened fenders, as the front fascia receives a restylized front lip spoiler, partnered with a larger, blacked-out grille and intakes. The whole package only increases the curb weight of the WRX by 34 pounds, and coupled with the "265-horsepower" turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four, the 2011 WRX has the goods to back up its looks... no matter which body-style you choose. Full details in the press release after the jump and expect a slew of shots from the floor at the New York Auto Show.

  3. Eh, it's an improvement.

    Still fugly though.
  4. That whole rear quarter panel section is an awful mess. I shudder to think what the back looks like. The front is definitely better though.
  5. the impreza should have been like this from the beginning, can't stand the hatchback rear
  6. that's pretty bad
  7. better than before
  8. Needs a big wing and an Sti badge/engine
  9. Godzilla took a shit or something.
  10. I prefer this over the hatchback.
  11. the hatchback was #$%#ing stupid. this looks a lot better. still the 1st impreza is the only impreza that matters.
  14. if it was the original wrx id approve
  15. im surprised to see a stupid comment coming from you
  16. Nice Toyota.

  20. at least it's not a hatchback.
  22. Better, but still shit.
  23. Eh. WRX is always ugly if you think about it. Look at the details of the previous gen WRX... the front, the rear, it's all really awkward looking. But you grow to love it. Same with this, eventually we will love seeing them.
  24. No
    not with this one
  25. This.

The older ones certainly weren't "pretty" but they looked awesome in an aggressive as #$%# kind of way. These ones are just fat and ugly looking.
