With the launch of our new layout, which isn't quite done, (but when is anything on Supercars.net done?) I thought it would be a good chance to go back and learn from our mistakes. Nothing to hide here, the first two iterations of the main page sucked. But somehow they planted the seed (which is over 10 years old!) which grew to where we are today (v3.0b!). We might not be as popular as our glory years (when html was too confusing for the common man), but maybe it's a sign that we are all getting old. There's probably very few people that know the recent design, which might lend its way to forums, is actually the 5th major revision. The earlier four are posted below. It's been a pleasure doing Supercars.net throughout the years, almost all the ad money has gone back into the site. Had we abandoned ship and sold early, we'ed probably be a millionaires.. These take me back, and remind me of a time when words like cyberspace and webmaster were the norm.
seriously, i pine for #3. that kicked the crap out of pretty much every other car forum/site out there, and that format lasted for years.
The blue page was CLASSIC, but white text on a blue background isn't for everyone. Could you imagine reading a whole book like that?
I remember when I first started coming to this site that the title's typeface reminded me of dinosaurs, or something.
I'm still on the "Royal Blue" colour scheme. I've read probably the equivalent of the Bible about 50 times on this blue and white scheme. My eye sight isn't 20/20 anymore, and I get horrible migraines, but I won't ever change it! I'm a RICHARD OWEN fanboy.
I remember the first one <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/grin.gif"></A> I had all the .htmls saved in the 1GB HDD of my Acer Aspire, back in like 1997. And months ago doing some cleaning of the drawers in my desk I found that I had a print of the list in the second format. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/grin.gif"></A> I used to come here like daily, way before the forums, to see if you had added any new car to the list and then to procceed to save the html and the pics (as "save link as" since the links used to lead to the .jpg files) And I did this for years before even making an account in the forum, surfing supercars.net with my 14.4kbps modem. (insane how techology has evolved)
by the way I would actually like to say well done on the new design... i really think it's awesome, and much more "of the present" than the previous design
I disagree. Im still on original royal blue and it looks the best. edit: also, its still THE supercars.net color(s)
uh, yes I did. There was a moment between 1.0 and 2.0 when the old car pages were made in the "old"/green format and some of the newer ones were in the "new"/2.0/black format.
