The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Discussion in '1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C' started by Gamer55, Oct 27, 2002.

  1. I just saw Motortrend tv and they compared the old 427 to the new Series 1 and the 427 beat it in just about every category 0-60, 1/4 mile, 0-100, salom, and you can get the 427 for less money.

I don't trust that article. 450 hp strapped to 2800lbs doesn't yeild a 4.4 0-60. The non s-charged series 1 has been rated at 4.4 0-60. The original is still better though.

  3. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well when they tested the 427 it hit 60 in 3.8 or 3.9 sec!!!!!! And they were also useing the supercharged version of the series 1 and they said it cost them $186,000!!!!! And the series 1 hit 60 in 4.1 sec. By the way a guy about 5 houses down from me has a series 1 and its sweeeeeet!!!!

series one is nice and if you look closely at both of them you can see the similarities in them, but id still have the cobra evry time, that 427 V8 is unmatchable

  5. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best car of its time and still better than cars to this day!

  6. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They were not testing an original cobra. They were testing one of Shelby's reproductions. Do you honestly think Motor Trend or any other magazine would drive a collector's car worth over half a million dollars into the ground like they do other cars (which are passed magazine to magazine so are usually in pretty rough shape)

  7. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

number one a series 1 cost less then a orignal cobra its about 100 k on average or a lil more and the 427's run for 300k + depending on condition and engine (427 or the small block)and number 2 the series 1 isnt built like the cobras it has to be up to enviornment shit standards not like the cobra

  8. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The price has actually gone up for a Series 1, they're around 165-200k depending on how you equip it. Much more expensive than one of Shelby's reproduction Cobras (which is what's being compared here I think), but it is also a more complete car IMO.

lets do some math. this car is only 2300 lbs, and has a factory rating of 425 horses. first off, if this were true, it would still have a faster quarter with a 3.54 gear ratio out back. the factory actually extremely under rated muscle cars at the time for insurance reasons. most of the stats on the muscle cars on the web page are false. a genuine 66 cobra will do 0-100 and stop, yes stop, in 13 seconds. they do 10 sec. quarters. in this case, 425 horse may mean the rear wheels. the factory constantly liaed about specs. the physics of these cars does not match with their existing power to wieght ratios, let alone their rear gearing. do you people truly think that, for example, the factory rating on a 1970 ls6 454 chevelle is a 13.8 quarter mile, with a 4.10 gear ratio, and 3400lbs? because thats bullshit. they do 12.00 flat out. that stock 454 is around 500 ponies, not the factory rated 450hp. same with all of the hemis, and 440s and 396s, 409s, 427s, 428s, and etc......... the old cobra would roast the living shit out of a series one. hardcore. they obviously did not use a gennie 66 cobra. the series one is cool, but its not roasting any of its predecesors.

the only bad thing is the gear change..
with four gears u can hang on to one gear longer but it
might accelerate better with five or six...
    anyway a splendid car <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

I don't care what anyone says, the 427 Shelby Cobra would roast a Series One, you can supe a car up all you want but the 427 Cobra would roast just about every one. The Cobra is amazingly aheah of its time. If the Series One can't keep up with it than you know that either something is wrong or that the people who thought up the 427 Cobra were car geniuses.

  12. Do they still make these?

I have heard that AC and or Shelby is still making cobras. Is this true? If it is could I have a link to an official site that verifies it (bet with friend).

Shelby made some reproductions a few year back, i don't know if he still is. Right now shelby is producing replicas of Eleanor, from gone in sixty seconds.

Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw a Shelby Series 1 by the movies once. I was walkin round thje corner after the movie and this girl I was with said "ooo, look at that car". She had no idea what it was and I hadn't noticed it, but when she said it my jaw just dropped. It was silver with blue stripes, and it looked AMAZING, even in the darkness of night. Anyways, the Cobra would logically smoke the Series 1, but the Series one looks better and might be more comfortable, imo.

And yes, Shelby IS manufacturing more Cobras. They're not really "replicas" because the same company is making them anyways. They come in either fiberglass or aluminum bodies with either a 289 block or a 427 block. There are also three version: the Phantom, the 40th Anniversary, and the Contiuation. They're only making 10, yes TEN Phantom versions. They come with a Phantom Red paintjob, and each car is signed by Carrol Shelby himself. The 40th Anniversary is just like the COntinuation Version but with some minor differences and only 40 are being made. The Continuation Version is the average one. Im not sure how many will be made but I think they're built on request.

The 427 owns the series 1 in looks power and performance.

  16. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I wouldlike to know is: Dident Shelby make 2 special cobras 1 for Bill Cosby and 1 for Steve mcqueen. They were 427's with dual pasxon Superchargers. Have those ever been tested?????

  17. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree....I alwas wondered how much faster a 1966 427 would have been with a 426 hemi instead of the 427 Ford.

  18. Re: The 427 Cobra will killl the Series 1 any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, if money were no option, then I would definitely take the 427 Cobra over the Shelby Series 1. The 427 Cobra is definitely a classic, and accelerates like none other. The car is a piece of history, and you could most likely sell it for a lot more then you could sell a Series 1 if both of them were in perfect condition.

  19. Yup shelby did build two twin supercharched 427 cobras. As you said one was for him and one was for bill cosby. I wanna say the horsepower was somwhere in the neighborhood of 900. Cosby talks about it on his "200 mph" record.
