    I once saw a picture of a '30's Mercedes with a mid-engine..... but I don't remeber where I saw it.

I am fairly certain that the auto union put the engine behind the driver before mb started doing it. Because it was such a controversial idea put in place by porsche im assuming he tried it before mb.

Mercedes only used a mid engine in its Speed Cars, not its GP cars. Oddly enough, the mid engine Audi's were designed by none other than Ferdinan Porsche.

  5. it was not the first midengine race car but it was the first midengine race car with a layout still used today..and it was the first successfull midengine race car winning several races.

The new was that AutoUnion put the fuel tank between the driver and engine right into the center of the car, that way the fuel always stayed weight neutral no matter if the giant tank was filled op or close befor empty, it never had a effect on the car balance.. this layout is still used in the F1 today..
