As far as I'm concerned, Hamelin plays the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 correctly. That's the way I learned it, with the proper expression, tempo, and tone. Not to say I could ever play it as well as either of them but Lang's interpretation, on the other hand, throws the tempo way out of range, and plays it like he hates it. Confuses me. Like he's trying to modernize it and make it zany. And we all know how much I hate modern and zany.

    What do you think?

    Marc Andre Hamelin

    Lang Lang
  2. Oh god!!! God!

That second one is a travesty. It's really overly theatrical and just plain harsh at points the transitions in the tempo are also pretty forced. I think he was going for a sort of pomp and regal presentation but it doesn't work. It sounds like he is forcing the music out and fighting the piano.
  3. It's a farce of over-emphasized expression and pretentious liberties taken with the interpretation of the music.

I hate Lang Lang, goddamn aZn's.
