Topgear settles Supercar Debate

Discussion in 'Car Comparisons' started by udip21, Nov 4, 2004.

  1. If I'm correct Clarkson said while driving the Enzo "This thing would eat the Carrera GT! It makes the Porsche more like a Bentley!" and then continued "The gap between this and the McLaren SLR is as wide as the gap between Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard! This is now THE performance benchmark. This is THE speed king..."

  2. This doesn't even come close to settling the debate, it only proves it on that particular track on that particular day under those particular conditions, there really is no way to definitively prove which car is better. You can't duplicate track results in motorcars, especially with humans driving. You make the most minute changes in the driving of the car or the weather conditions and you get different results. And no two tracks are exactly the some, and those differences mean that one car will have an advantage at that track on that day. Not to mention that human drivers cannot ceven complete two laps with out doing things minutely different. You can't really prove that one car is better than the others, there are too many variables, ultimately, it just comes down to your personal opinion, which can't be proven or disproven.

  3. Clarkson is a Ferrari fanboy. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  4. If the only car thar that can beat the Enzo is the MC12, then why have some magazines preferred the CGT to the Enzo? Why did the CGT beat the Enzo around Levante?

  5. Do you actually suggest that Clarkson saying that means something? Cmon, Clarkson is the biggest Ferrari fanboy on earth.

  6. no

  7. No I don't. Of course he's a fanboy. I just like the way he express himself when he totaly lose it <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

On the other hand you can't argue that he's driven every sportscar/supercar came out since the "big bang" and still saying Ferraris are the best.

  8. Are they ever gonna test the 04 S7?

  9. Are they ever gonna test the 04 S7?

  10. They'll probably get one to test, I mean they've managed to find an Enzo...

  11. you got to be kidding me that the ford gt will take forever to reach its top speed,

    Ferrari Enzo
    0-60 3.3secs
    0-100 6.7secs
    0-150 15.5secs
    1/4mile times 11.1@133mph

    Ford GT
    0-60 3.3secs
    0-100 8.1secs
    0-150 16.9secs
    0-170mph 23secs
1/4mile 11.69@122.74 (popular mechanics at arizona proving grounds in hot arse weather)

plus the ford uses 5 gears to hit 212mph the ferrari uses 6 to attain 217mph*

the ford gets better gas milleage. and even then after a hundred the ferrari barely tacks on any gain to 150mph meaning the ford gt is actually keeping up not being to outpaced.

the smaller ford engine even produces more torque than the ferrari and has less hp, yet on a tight twisty track where a 4times more expensive suspension and electronically controlled at that is 1.9secs faster on a track is alot but that means that on the track at topgear the ford is doing the last turn while the ferrari is passing the finishing line, hardly a slaughter for a car you cant buy the company picks you instead and one that was outsold before any came off the production line...so in all relevances yes the ferrari should beat the gt it costs 4times more it has over a 100 ponies over it and is just as light or lighter...yet instead of delivering a slaughter it only beats it...

oh yea hp = (torque * rpms)/5252....so relying on hp/L is a classic example of not knowing how hp works and why it works.

in all reality one should try and make torque and hp relatively equal or not far off...imagine if ferrari instead of 8000rpms stuck for 6000rpms and instead of under 500ftlbs of torque got some 580ftlbs....look at the s7 it is 100hp less than the enzo yet is quicker to 60 to 100 and in the 1/4mile

  13. Quote from EliteWolverine "look at the s7 it is 100hp less than the enzo yet is quicker to 60 to 100 and in the 1/4mile"

Wish that were true but the 04 S7 hasnt been tested yet. The 2003 model hit 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, 0-100 in 7.6 (although I read somewhere it hit 100 in 7 seconds flat), and 1/4 Mile in 11.6 seconds at 126 mph (Car and Driver).

  14. The Enzo has achieved better figures than that.

  15. Maybe it is me or maybe it was working in the Bleeding edge of the car world for 3 years but the current crop of hypercars holds no mystery to me. They are just dull in my humble opinion.

Like the Clarkson/Topgear debate concluded, the F40 is the car to have over the Enzo. Not because it is better, because it isn't. The F40 is more alive, just more exciting and more raw.

  16. enter s7 and ford gt...clarkson did buy the gt remember

both have no traction control or any gismos and gadgets to wow you buy like in the enzo (save the dvd player standard in the s7 that functions as a rear view mirror), s7 has no abs...sure they are alot more 'refined' than the f40 but the only area it realy is in is the construction quality from the f40 to the gt and s7, ie no carpet glue visible everywhere no power windows NO RADIO NO AC and things like that...

everybody wants either flat out kit car ie f40 and mosler or all out technoadvance car mclaren and enzo and so forth, the s7 and gt imo are a compromise between current laws and rawness.

  17. The Mcalren F1 didn't have any ABS, TC or any safety features along the same lines. It was all mechanical for the most part.

  18. Neither the S7 or the Ford GT do it for me either. That is not to say they aren't great cars. I am just board of hyper cars I think as most of them get outsourced to engineering companies and I am still connected to that world the mystery is gone.

More interesting I think are these cottage industries making cars Like Noble, Caterham and Ultima. Lotus for me will always be the most emotive

Before anyone moans, this is just my opinion.
