UPDATE2 - NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

  1. NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

So I got a new timing belt fitted on Thursday after 75,000 miles and 11 years on my 1.8 mx-5.

Was driving back from the beach, accelerating on a main road up to 70 mph, when I hear a loud thud, followed by the engine running like absolute shit, managed to limp to the nearest garage and get a mate from work to rescue me.

What do you reckon has happened? I think it might have jumped a tooth, because if it snapped then the engine would have just stopped yeah? Also, do you think this would cause a lot of damage to the engine? The mx-5 engine is a non-interference engine, so I know that timing belt failure doesn't mean the pistons hit the valves.

Gonna go back to the garage on Monday and get the baboon who fitted the belt to recover my car and sort it.

***UPDATE*** - Ok so apparently the timing is all fine, and it runs ok from cold, until it's warmed up then it can't hold revs properly and is super-jerky. Any ideas what this could be anyone?

***UPDATE 2***- The camshaft sensor had fallen out and was making the car act all weird

the engine might be non interference, but that doesn't mean that the valves won't contact each other if it is so badly mistimed.

but if you just had it changed, i would start there as a likely culprit.

    annoying AND retarded

Is your Miata automatic or manual transmission?

  8. NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

why does this affect whether my engine has grenaded its innards or not?

who would even get auto on such a car??

  9. NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

Effect are greater with a manual tranny.

When a timing belt break, with a manual transmission, the engine goes on compression mode, meaning that the pistons in the engine goes up and down, and that could hit the valves that are open.

On an automatic, the engine stops completely. There's no compression being done with an auto. No pistons hitting valves. Unless you start cranking the engine with the starter.

A friend of mine had a Eunos version.

    Autotragic

    It's a non-interference engine.

Hmm ok just gone to the garage where I had the cambelt installed and they are going to recover it for me as its still 10 miles out of town, then have a look at it.

I think they pretty much accept it's their #$%# up and so I expect them to put whatever they have messed up right, even if it means some bent valves or a new cylinder head or worse

  14. NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

hopefully these idiots know not to tow the mx-5 on it's back wheels, cos that can wreck the transmission as well. hopefully they have a low loader or something like that

  15. NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

what kind of garage did you go to? just some generic place?

NB Mazda MX-5 Timing Belt Failure

yeah just one near the bottom of my road, used to take the civic there and they were fine with that, i do get the impression though that they might be a bunch of inbred devon yokels.

When I told my dad what happened he started going on about how i should have taken it to his mate Pauls, who is a specialist who looks after my mums mx-5s, but he's like 200 miles away from where i live at the moment: http://www.paulsheardautos.com/

There's a specialist in Weston Super Mare

EDIT: here's one in Okehampton http://www.findamazdamx5.co.uk/

i'm just going off what it recommends in the haynes repair manual. It says the transmission can be damaged by doing that, even in neutral. Possibly the prop shaft or diff? i dunno. It says if absolutely necessary you can toe with the rears on the ground, but don't exceed 35 mph.

hmm, shit. Perhaps I should have gone to that one in Okehampton, although it would have meant taking a day off working. But then if you aren't wrecking your car by doing that then I suppose it doesn't matter. Plus you get to drive through Dartmoor on the way there

lol took me 5 mins to find both of those and post them here.

always worth looking for a specialist, esp if it has a large following.
